Zaim Cafe Anex is only a five-minute walk from Ishikawacho station in Yokohama, but finding this hideaway of a café requires a map and some wandering in the area. The coffee shop opened its doors in 2008石川町駅から歩いて５分程度だが、地図を片手に迷いながら探し出す隠れ家のようなカフェ、 ZAIM CAFE ANNEX（ザイム・カフェ・アネックス）。横浜市芸術文化振興財団によって運営されていた横浜スタジアム近くのアーティスト活動拠点「ZAIM」が閉館したあと、2008年に別館として現在の場所に開かれた。
築83年の一軒家が完全改装され、カフェ兼ギャラリー、ライブスペースとしても利用されている。吹き抜けになっている天井からアンティークのランプがつり下げられ、冬は薪ストーブが店内を居心地良く暖める。お客さんにはお酒を飲みながら、空間を楽しんでいただきたい、とカフェにはさまざまな席を用意している。個性的なソファや椅子と作家によるオリジナルのコーヒーテーブルが店中に置かれている。外には夏に使われる大きなバーベキューグリルが設置され、パーティーや結婚式の二次会の会場としても人気がある。
ギャラリーとしては、古い民家という重みのある空間を意識し、敢えてポップな作品を紹介しようと心掛けているようだ。展覧会が開かれていないときは、ウォーホルやリキテンスタインのポスターが飾られている。住宅街にひっそりと佇んでいるため、近所迷惑にならないように、ライブは主にアコースティックだ。インドのシタールからフランスのシャンソンとバラエティーに富んだラインナップが楽しめる。
カフェというより昔の喫茶店にインスパイアされているメニュー。自慢は３日間煮込まれ、香辛料が効いているキーマカレーだ。その他に、ヨーグルトの味がさっぱりとしているベリーのパフェが人気だ。大人の雰囲気の建物にぴったりなお酒も種類が豊富で、オリジナルカクテルもある。
辿り着くのに少し苦労するぶん、あまり人には教えたくないカフェ。しかし、夏のバーベキューや冬の薪ストーブと、友人に囲まれてパーティーを開きたくなるスペースでもある。

The café, a renovated 83-year-old house, also serves as a gallery and live music space. Antique lamps hang from the high ceilings, and a wood stove warms the cozy interior in the wintertime. Unique couches and chairs, and even original tables made by artists, are placed throughout the redecorated home to offer customers a choice in finding the perfect seat to enjoy their drinks. In the outdoor garden space, there is a large barbecue grill used in the summer, making it a popular venue for parties and weddings.
To compensate for the somewhat somber, old house ambience, the gallery mostly introduces pop art. When there are no exhibitions on show, Warhol and Lichtenstein posters adorn the walls. Most of the music events held at the café are acoustic, as the house is tucked away in a quiet residential area. But the diverse musical lineup ranges from Indian sitar to French chanson.
The menu at Zaim Cafe Anex is more reminiscent of an old school Japanese coffee shop than that of a “café.” The spicy keema curry that’s been cooked for 3 days is the kitchen’s recommendation. The refreshing berry yogurt parfait is another favorite. Befitting the adult-friendly atmosphere, the drink menu offers plenty of alcohol choices, including original cocktails.
Once you find this hidden eatery and gallery, you may not want to share it with others. But the summer barbecues and warm winter stove make this is an ideal space for holding parties, surrounded by friends.
