Surrounded by greenery and facing the open sea, the ocean and the sun are omnipresent at the Yokosuka Museum of Art. The front entrance with its well-kept lawn provides a panoramic view of large ships traveling across the horizon.海と光を感じられる横須賀美術館は、三方を豊かな緑に囲まれ、海に向かって大きく開けた敷地に建っている。芝生に覆われた正面からは、ゆったりと往来する大型船の姿がパノラマの如く見渡せる。
この恵まれた周辺環境と一体化している美術館は、建物の約半分が地下に埋め込まれており、さらに海側と山側のどちらからでもアクセスし、通り抜けることができる。またレストランやワークショップスペースは海の広場に面している一方、山の広場は屋上広場に連続し、美術館の内部に通じている。このように建物の中にいても常にまわりの自然環境を感じられる開放的な設計だ。
また海からの塩風に耐えるために、美術館内部はガラスで覆われている。正面入口から足を踏み入れると、天井や側面に開けられた大小の丸窓から陽光が差し込み、木漏れ日のような柔らかな光に包まれる。
展示は企画展が年に６回、所蔵品展が年に４回、谷内六郎館での展示が年に４回行われている。所蔵作品は大正時代以降、戦前・戦後にわたる昭和時代の作品に恵まれ、名作も数多く所有している。横須賀にゆかりのある作家の作品も含め、日本の20世紀の美術の歴史をたどるコレクションが収集されている。

At one with this blessed environment, almost half of the Museum’s structure is ensconced beneath the ground. Yet, the Museum is accessible from both the ocean and mountain-side, so that visitors can walk through the building from one entrance to the other. On the ocean-side are a restaurant and a workshop space, while the plaza facing the mountain leads to the rooftop and down into the Museum. The structural design of the building offers visitors constant contact with the surrounding environment.
In order to weather the salty sea wind, the Museum’s interior is protected with glass. One step inside the front entrance, and there are circular windows of all sizes on all sides of the building with sunbeams pouring in and filling the entire space with light.
Special exhibits are held 6 times a year, exhibits from the museum’s collection are held 4 times, and the Taniuchi Rokuro Gallery puts on 4 shows a year as well. The Museum collection dates back to the Taisho era (1912-1926), boasts works from the pre and post-war Showa era (1926-1989), and includes numerous masterpieces. Artists associated with the city of Yokosuka are also displayed here. The Museum’s collection aims to trace the history of 20th Century Japanese art.
