Meikyoku Kissa Lion is a cafe that has been collecting LPs more than several decades. The collection now reached over 5,000戦後、進駐軍などから買い集めたという5000枚以上のLPを所蔵し、今もなお新しいCDが増え続けているという「名曲喫茶ライオン」は、クラシック音楽を高音質の音響装置で聴かせる、いわゆる名曲喫茶。賑やかな渋谷道玄坂の裏手にある。入り口の正面にかかっているライオンの木彫りの壁掛けは、初代店長による手彫りの作品だ。
初代店長のいとこがロンドンのライオンベーカリーにパンの修行に行き、そこで教わってきたというコーヒーの入れ方を初代店長が忠実に再現して、喫茶店を開いたのが1926（昭和元）年。以来、毎日その場で豆を挽き、ネルドリップで風味豊かな一杯を提供し続けている。
当初、地下と３階にも客席があり、各階に音響スピーカーが備え付けられていたが、30年ほど前に消防法によりフロアを閉鎖。現在は、１、２階の約100席に規模が縮小された。店の奥に初代店長がデザインしたオリジナルの木製大型スピーカーが、吹き抜けの２階に鎮座している。
20年以上通い、モーツアルトだけをリクエストし続けたクリーニング屋の“モーツアルトおじさん”、２階席の吹き抜けから階下に向かって指揮者のごとくタクトを振る男性、レコードを買えないクラシック愛好家、立体音響に魅せられた老若男女から永く愛されている。
毎日、15時と19時に定時コンサートと称して、さまざまな名曲をコンサート会場と同じ音響、臨場感でオープン当時から開催している。コンサート時間帯以外はリクエストにも応じてくれる。クラシカルな店内はファストデザインにはない新鮮さと落ち着きがあり、清潔に保たれ、エアコンも完備されているのでゆったりと音楽を愉しめる。
世界に「カワイイ」という言葉を浸透させたジャパニーズカルチャーの一部は、間違いなく、ここ渋谷から発信されてきた。時代とともに進化を遂げたそんな街の片隅で、ひっそりとオープン当時の面影を残したままの薄暗い空間、紅色のベロアの椅子に身を沈めてクラシックに耳を傾ける人たちがいる。
フルトベングラーやコルトーなどの名演奏を圧倒的な音響で聴きながら、コーヒーを飲める静かな場所が渋谷にあるということ。そんな体験が今改めて、贅沢なことなんだろうと思う。

The founder of the cafe crossed ocean to England and got trained coffee dripping at Lion Bakery in London. The founder practiced the way of coffee dripping out there. In 1926, the cafe was opened and had been serving genuine British coffee.
Originally, the cafe had tables on the basement and third floor, but those two were closed because of the restriction of fire department. Today, there are 100 sheets on the first and second floor. Original wooden amplifiers designed by the founder of cafe are sitting on the second floor built in hell-hole style. The place is loved by irrespective of age or gender.
Many different famous classic music are played 3 and 7 o’clock in the afternoon and evening. People are able to make requests in other hours.
Tokyo is the source and acknowledges the world about Japanese pop culture. Meikyoku Kissa Lion is classic cafe exists that people can recall good old days in the center of concrete jungle of modern city Tokyo.
