In the end of May 2010, the Akihabara-Okachimachi, under elevated redevelopment project “2k540 AKI-OKA ARTISAN” was partially opened before its grand opening in December when there will be a completion of craft workshop studios2010年5月末日、秋葉原・御徒町高架下再開発プロジェクト「2k540 AKI-OKA ARTISAN」の一部が先行オープンした。12月のグランドオープンにはクラフト系工房が充実し、新たな日本の象徴となるようなアルティザン（職人）が集うエリアとなる。この一角で、アイコン的な存在として先行入居したのがアーティストであり、「HIROCOLEDGE」（ヒロコレッジ）ディレクターの高橋理子（たかはし・ひろこ）だ。
アーティスト高橋理子の新たな活動拠点であり、発信基地となる「HIROCOLEDGE & Co. / HIROCOLEDGE SHOP」について、教えてください。
高架下いっぱいの天井高があるこの空間は、高橋理子のアトリエ・ギャラリーであり、「HIROCOLEDGE & Co.」の事務所であり、「HIROCOLEDGE SHOP」でもあります。ここから私の活動の全てが発信されていきます。ブランドとしての「HIROCOLEDGE」のデザインだけでなく、私の活動全般がこの空間、この机から生み出されていくというようなイメージです。
手ぬぐい本来の良さを活かした「スリーブバッグ」も人気ですね。
洋服もすごく好きでつくりたいのですが、いざつくると無駄な部分が多いことにがっかりします。職人さんが手作業で一生懸命染色したものを捨てるのは、自分が単純に心地良くありません。もったいないという感覚は誰しも持ってると思います。ゴミになっていくのは気持ちのいいものではないですよね。手ぬぐいは、必要な幅の生地を長く織って、横に切っただけで、その瞬間に道具になります。その手ぬぐいをまったく切らずに縫うだけでバッグにしたものが「スリーブバッグ」です。そういった、無駄のないモノづくりを心がけています。
デザインされるときに意識されていることはありますか？
例えば、着物をデザインするというのが表面的な柄だけであるならば、私はそういうつもりで着物をつくっていません。着物を使って何を伝えていくか。着物の表面的ではない裏側の部分に何があるか。そういうことを理解してもらうために、着物を使って活動しています。
着物が完成するまでに、染め、その下処理、後処理、白い反物を織る人、道具をつくる人、そして絹という原料を作る人。とにかくものすごくたくさんの職人さんが関わっています。なかなかそういう存在がいることも皆さんには知られていないと思うので、伝統技法についても紹介できればと思っています。
また、日本の和物と言われてるものに対する固定観念みたいなものを変えていきたいし、崩していきたいとも思っています。私の生み出すものは“和風”ではなく、今の時代の“和”と認識してもらえたら嬉しいです。
最後に、お気に入りの場所について教えてください。
六本木ヒルズ内にある映画館「TOHOシネマズ」の７番シアターです。都内で最大級のスクリーン、優れた音響システムで、深夜まで映画鑑賞が楽しめます。あまりオフがなく、オフらしい時間の楽しみ方は映画を見に行くことくらいなので、仕事が終わった深夜などによく観に行きます。空間のバランスがとても良く、都内で映画を最も楽しめる場所だと思います。
もうひとつは、落語好きなので「浅草演芸ホール」。昔ながらの寄席の雰囲気を楽しむことができます。

Text: mina for artisans representing new Japan. One leading occupant has become an icon in this space, who is a director of “HIROCOLEDGE”, Hiroko Takahashi.
Please tell us about your new work base HIROCOLEDGE & Co. / HIROCOLEDGE SHOP.
Making good use of spacious high-ceiling room under the elevated railroad, it is a Hiroko Takahashi’s atelier gallery-cum-office, “HIROCOLEDGE & Co.” and “HIROCOLEDGE SHOP”. This is a place to send messages on all my activities. It highlights not only “HIROCOLEDGE” design as a store brand, but also all of my actions which are created in this room and on this table.
“Sleepbag” is a popular item while making the most of original tenugui (a thin Japanese hand towel made of cotton).
Although I love making clothes, sometimes when it comes to making, I get disappointed to see so many wasteful rags. It’s just simply uncomfortable to waste what a craftsman elaborately hand-dyed. I guess everybody has a feeling of “too good to be a waste”. It’s not nice to see something become trash, is it? Tenugui can be any tool just as you weave and cut cloth into the needed width and length. “Sleepbag” is made of tenugui with no cutting at all. Keeping that policy in my mind is the way of my creation.
What is your focus on design?
For example, I don’t design a kimono only considering its facile pattern. When it comes down to it, my concern is what message I can convey with the kimono. What is hidden besides on the surface of the kimono. In order to get my point over to others, I carry on with my work using a kimono.
In the process of kimono making, so many artisans are involved: dyeing, mop-ups, making a roll of white cloth, making a tool, and making a raw material called silk. I hope to introduce traditional techniques of these fairly unknown people as well.
And also, I would like to make some changes on a fixed idea about Japan. It will be my pleasure if what I create is recognized as present Japan not so called “Japanese style”.
Lastly, tell us your favorite places in Tokyo.
Screen 7 at the movie theater “TOHO Cinemas” in Roppongi Hills, where you can enjoy watching movies until late night with an advanced sound system and the biggest screen in Tokyo. As I am quite busy with work, what I can do for my spare time will be watching movies, and I often go to watch movies late at night after work . The balance of space is also good, so I think it would be the place where you can enjoy movies the most in Tokyo.
As I like Rakugo (comic monologue), another place is Asakusa Engei Hall, where you can enjoythe atmosphere of the traditional Rakugo theater.
