Tucked away in the neighbourhood of Bakurocho, the east side of Tokyo known as the place for CET, and filled with countless textile wholesalers packed side by side, a colourful, quirky building called ‘Agata Takezawa’CET (セントラル・イースト・トーキョー）でも話題のイーストサイド。繊維系卸問屋が数多く軒を連ねる馬喰町界隈に、コンテンポラリー・アート・ギャラリーや個性的なショップ、クリエイターのアトリエなどが数多く入居し、異彩を放つアガタ竹澤ビルがある。山形の食材を使ったカフェ、フクモリの隣だ。
１階の「work×shop noya op」はジュエリーのアトリエ兼ショップ。華奢なレースのようなデザインを特徴とした「yoshinob」や、繊細かつアノニマスな風合いが魅力のブランド「noya op」が並ぶ。ジュエリーショップの既成概念を跳び越えたクリエイティブスペースとして2010年1月下旬、正式にオープンしたばかりだ。ビル内にはランチやコーヒーが楽しめるギャラリーもあるので、ゆっくりと自分のペースで最新のコンテンポラリー・アートを鑑賞できる。
まずはビルに入居する３つのコンテンポラリー・アート・ギャラリーから紹介しよう。「TARO NASU」は2008年、六本木アートコンプレックスの取り壊しに伴い移転してきた1998年開廊のギャラリー。ホワイトキューブに対する問いからも、作品空間そのものを来館者が体験することをコンセプトにし、空間のリノベーションは青木淳がデザインした。手法やメディアとしての新しさではなく、長いスパンでいい作品を作っていくアーティストに注目し、松江泰治やジョージェ・オズボルトなど数多くの国内外のアーティストが所属。G-tokyoの出展では、ライアン・ガンダーを紹介していた。
川内倫子、梶井照陰、長野陽一などが所属する「FOIL GALLERY」は、1989年にリトルモア、2004年にアート本中心の出版社「FOIL」を立ち上げた竹井正和が、アートの可能性を世界に向け新たに発信する場所として2007年にオープン。市川孝典の初個展など若手アーティストの刺激的な企画展が開催されている。
武蔵野美術大学が運営する「gallery αＭ」は、ジャンルを問わず質の高い表現と可能性を有するアーティストに作品発表の機会を提供すること、社会に斬新な価値を発信できるキュレーターに展示企画の場を提供することをコンセプトにしている、ノンプロフィット・ギャラリーだ。
また、２階の“アーツ&クラフツ&フーズ”をテーマとしたギャラリー兼ダイナー「馬喰町ART+EAT」では、レモン風味のチキンバーベキュー、ラムのカフタ（串焼き）など安全でおいしい野菜を使ったレバント（地中海の東のエリア）料理が食せる。店内では、さまざまな企画展を通して人とアートが楽しく出会えるようなきっかけを提供している。
アート以外にも駒込にお店があった時からその名を知らしめていた、雑貨好きには有名なドイツ雑貨店「マルクト」や、同じくドイツ、チェコなどの東欧雑貨や文具を扱う「CEDOK」は女性目線で集められた東欧雑貨も多く、絵本も充実している。
ファッションでは、シンプルなアイテムを造形的にデザインする「Disk1」が、アトリエ兼全ラインを展開するショップとしてオープン。また、100年経っても好きなもの、着ているだろうものをコンセプトに生まれた「n100（エヌワンハンドレッド）」では、高い技術で国内の工場でつくられた細番手のカシミヤを使用し、軽くて暖かいセーターなどが並んでいる。月に数日、ショップとしてオープンするのでサイトで確認してから出掛けたい。
他にも、日本の職人技術と独特なデザインを共存させているレッグウェアブランド「ayamé」、アンティークやヴィンテージのモチーフをソースにデザインされたアクセサリーショップ「MAISON S’ADOUCIR」など、ニューフェイスも続々登場。今後も注目のアドレスとして目が離せない。

Text: mina houses everything from contemporary art galleries and unique shops to artist ateliers. It is located opposite the café, Fukumori, which specialises in Yamagata foods.
‘Work×shop noya op’ is an example of a combined atelier and shop specialising in jewellery, located on the first floor, displaying delicately designed brands such as ‘yoshinob’ and ‘noya op’. This jewellery shop, which breaks the stereotypes of a jewellery shop and functions more as a creative space, only just officially opened at the end of January in 2010. As the building also contains various galleries where you can enjoy lunch and coffee, you can appreciate the newest contemporary art at your own leisurely pace.
Three of the following mentioned contemporary art galleries are good places to start from.
Firstly, ‘Taro Nasu’ is a gallery which moved from the now-demolished Roppongi Art Complex in 2008, although it was originally established in 1998. Here, designer Jun Aoki renovated the space based on the concept of giving visitors the direct experience of being in the space of the installation or artwork itself, as an answer to the question of the ‘white cube’ Instead of featuring new, recent techniques or media, the gallery focuses on artists who have produced consistently good works over a long span of time, working with many local and international artists such as Taiji Matsue and Djordje Ozbolt. Ryan Gander was also featured at the G-tokyo exhibit.
Next up is ‘Foil Gallery’, opened in 2007 by Masakazu Takei, who was behind the 1989 founding of ‘Little More’ and the 2004 establishment of art book publishing house, ‘Foil’. The gallery works with artists such as Rinko Kawauchi, Syoin Kajii and Yoichi Nagano, in a bid to communicate the freshest ideas and possibilities present in art to the world. Thought-provoking exhibitions such as Kosuke Ichikawa’s first solo exhibition and exhibitions by young artists have been held here.
Lastly, with ‘gallery αＭ’, you will discover a non-profit gallery run by Musashino Art University for the purpose of providing opportunities for both forward-looking artists who produce high-quality work, regardless of genre, to showcase their art, as well as curators who can express the novel merit of these ideas to society through planned exhibitions.
In addition, the second storey is home to a themed ‘arts and crafts and foods’ gallery-cum-diner named ‘Bakurocho ART+EAT’, where you can indulge in Levantian (located eastwards in the Mediterranean Sea) cuisine, of which lemon-flavoured chicken barbecue, spit-roasted lamb kofta are a few examples, paired with healthy and delicious vegetables. The diner also creates a fun environment where people from all walks of life can meet as they enjoy the exhibition.
There are a few other shops of interest in the building; a well-known German merchandise store ‘Markte’, which used to be located in Komagome features imported things other than art, and ‘CEDOK’, which stocks many miscellaneous goods, stationery and picture books from countries in Eastern Europe like Czech Republic and Germany, catered for the female buyer.
When it comes to shopping, ‘Disk1 is the place to go. As an atelier and shop, it displays an entire range of items designed very simply.
On top of that, ‘n100’ is a unique shop born of the concept that the clothes it manufactures will continue to transcend fads and can also be worn 100 years in the future. The shop features clothes such as light yet warm sweaters created from the finest cashmere, produced with exquisite skill in local workshops. As the shop is only open a few days a month, it would be good to check the shop’s site for information before you visit.
Furthermore, new shops have entered the marketplace, such as legwear brand ‘ayamé’, which combines Japanese artisan craftsmanship with unique designs, as well as accessories shop ‘Maison S’Adoucir’, which draws inspiration from antiques and vintage motifs for its designs. Keep your eyes trained on this hangout!
