Whitestone Gallery, opened in 1967, is located in Sukiyabashi street, Ginza – a traditional area which conjures up the image of the Edo period. Since opening, it has showcased many masterpieces of modern and contemporary art, and has been well-recognised internationally. The Whitestone gallery also has branches in Karuizawa, Hong Kong, and Taipei. The gallery’s artwork also often make appearances in art fairs and galleries outside Japan.江戸の記憶を今に伝える、由緒ある銀座・数寄屋橋通り。高度成長期から銀座の発展と歩みを共にしてきた瀟洒なビルディングのスペースを改修し、創業50周年を迎えた老舗アート・ギャラリーが、銀座では２店舗目となる新たなスペースを2017年に開廊した。
「ホワイトストーン・ギャラリー」は、1967年に創業以来、近代巨匠絵画から現代美術までの作家を中心に幅広く取り扱い、東京、軽井沢のほか香港と台北にもギャラリーを展開。海外の美術館やギャラリーでの展覧会、アートフェアへも積極的に出展している。
銀座新館は、「ホワイトストーン・ギャラリー 台北」の建築を手掛けた隈研吾事務所から独立した虎尾亮太（虎尾＋謝建築設計）による設計で、改修もひとつの歴史の橋渡しと捉え、建物自体の歴史を未来へとつなぐ試みが実現した。
具体的には、新旧の素材を併置させつつ、それぞれの肌理やトーンを揃えることで、過去と現在をスムースに共存させている。また、既存の柱梁構造による構成の力強さを最大限に活かし、そこに敢えてシンプルな平面レイアウトを組み合わせることでフレキシブルな空間を実現。白を基調とした空間は斬新で開放的でありながら、「数寄屋」という言葉のもつ風流な含蓄をも匂わせる。日本の美意識と銀座の歩み、その新たな礎（いしずえ）に相応しいスペースが誕生した。

Text: Ayumi YakuraTo celebrate its 50th anniversary, they opened Whitestone Ginza New gallery this year. It is located in an elegant post war building (the gallery space has been recently renovated), and was designed by Ryota Torao, who after working for Kengo Kuma & Associates (which designed Whitestone Gallery Taipei), started his own architecture firm TORAO + HSIEH ARCHITECTS. It is an attempt to connect the history of the building itself to the future, taking renovation as a bridge of one history to one another.
Specific consideration is given to the smooth coexistence of the past and the present by aligning the old and new materials together with homogenization of each texture and tone. Besides, to the maximum use of structural strength originated in already existing column beam composition, simple surface floor plan is consciously applied, which comes to fruition as flexible spacious feeling. The white-based space gives impression of innovative and open however, it also connotates the fragrance of the word “Sukiya”. Now here heralds a birth of ideal space as a new corner stone, in which both Japanese aesthetics and progress of Ginza are constantly alive.
