Shiseido, one of Japan’s leading cosmetic makers, has contributed to various kinds of art patronage with the goal of ‘the discovery of new, deep value and creation of beautiful culture’. As a part of this, the Shiseido Gallery日本を代表する化粧品メーカーである資生堂は、「新しく深みのある価値を発見し、美しい生活文化を創造する」という企業理念を具現化する活動として、様々なメセナ活動を展開している。その一環として、次代を担う新進芸術家の支援という目的のもと1919年（大正8年）に開廊した資生堂ギャラリーは、改装や戦争、幾度かの移転による中断をはさみながら存続し続け、現存するなかでは日本で最古の画廊となっている。
ギャラリーは、銀座の目抜き通りである中央通りに面した東京銀座資生堂ビルの地下一階にある。スタッコ（化粧漆喰）仕上げの赤煉瓦色の外壁が印象的な建物は、スペイン人建築家リカルド・ボフィル氏の設計。地下には天井高5m超の開放的な空間が広がっており、インスタレーションや映像作品の展示の他、絵画、彫刻といったファインアートから建築、工芸、ファッションに至るまで、展示内容は実に幅広い。
ギャラリーへは、建物側面にあるギャラリー専用入り口から階段を使って辿り着くことができるが、正面入り口からエレベーターを使って降りることもできる。なお、階段を降りる途中にある中２階の空間に作品が展示されていることもあるので、見落とすことのないよう注意が必要だ。この中２階からは展覧会場全体を見渡すことができ、ここを先に通るか後に通るかで展覧会の見え方も違ってくるというユニークな構造になっている。
同ビルには資生堂パーラーをはじめとした由緒あるレストランやカフェも入居している。銀座ギャラリー巡りの途中に立ち寄りアート談義に花を咲かせるには、うってつけの場所と言えるだろう。

Text: Miki Matsumoto was opened in 1919 to support emerging leading artists. It has been suspended a few times because of renovation, war and transfer, and it now is the oldest existing gallery in Japan.
The gallery is located in the central avenue of Ginza in the basement of the Tokyo Ginza Shiseido Building. Ricardo Bofill, a Spanish architect, designed the building, characterized by its stucco and red brick wall. The basement consists of a open space with a five meter high ceiling, providing for a wide range of exhibition content from installations, motion graphics, fine arts such as paintings, sculptures, architecture, industrial arts and fashion.
To access the gallery it is possible to enter the basement using the dedicated staircase beside the building or through the main entrance using the elevator. Sometimes there are artworks on the mezzanine floor on the way down, so one needs to pay extra attention during their visit. From this mezzanine floor, it is possible to view the whole exhibition space.
This building also consists of distinguished restaurants and cafes including the Shiseido Parlour. It is an ideal place to pop in during your Ginza gallery visit and to be immersed in art discussion.
