根津美術館Nezu Museum

The Nezu Museum re-opened in October 2009. The new museum building was designed and supervised by a Japanese architect Kengo Kuma. The new Nezu Museum is a result of various ingenious plans根津美術館が日本を代表する建築家・隈研吾の設計で2009年10月にリニューアルオープンし、地上２階・地下１階の構造で延べ床面積約4,000m2と、今までの約２倍の広さとなり落ち着いた空間の中、多彩な展示を楽しめるようになった。根津美術館の新しいロゴは、ドイツ人デザイナーのペーター・シュミットによって制作されたもので、レッド・ドット・デザイン賞を受賞している。
リニューアルにあたり、絹や和紙、漆といったデリケートな素材を用いる東洋の古美術品を展示するため、独自に開発した最新技術による展示ケース内８万個のLEDは、太陽のような白い光から和ろうそくの暖かな光まで、作品の鑑賞に適した調光を可能にし、より間近に作品を鑑賞できるようになった。
根津美術館は、毎年４月下旬～５月上旬に公開される国宝の尾形光琳「燕子花屏風」、多くの重要文化財をはじめとする絵画や彫刻、工芸品、書跡典籍、考古資料など、東武鉄道の社長を務めた実業家の初代根津嘉一郎（1860～1940）が蒐集した作品が保管、展示されている美術館だ。
また、お茶室が点在する約17,000m2にも及ぶ広い日本庭園では、四季折々の移ろいを都会の中で体感できる。庭園内に新設された「NEZUCAFÉ」（写真）では壁面のガラスを通して豊かな自然を眺められ、静かで都会にいることを忘れてしまいそう。

Kengo Kuma tried to create an experience of ‘wa’ or Japanese harmony. Tradition has inspired the graceful expanse of Kuma’s massive tile roof and dark verticals of the exterior walls that signal entering a special place.
A new logo is designed by the German artist, Peter Schmidt. The capital letters of ‘N’ and ‘M’ of Nezu Museum were the basis for the graphic design of the logo. The mark recalls folding-screen paintings in the collection, such as Korin’s Irises. It also suggests ‘bamboo’ that aptly echoes the plantings and vertical exterior detailing of the new building.
The Nezu Museum collects more than 7,000 objects including calligraphy, painting, sculpture, metalworks, ceramics, lacquer, bamboo crafts, textiles, and archaeological work . There are seven items designated as National Treasures, 87 Important Cultural Properties, and 97 works registered as Important Art Objects.
Also a newly opened NEZUCAFÉ (photo) sets in the spacious traditional-style garden with several tea houses. The Nezu Museum is considered as a special place for arts that are related to ‘tea.’
