原美術館Hara Museum of Contemporary Art

As one of the pioneering contemporary art museums in Japan, the Hara Museum of Contemporary Art is certainly a fine representative since its inception in 1979. The museum is located in Shinagawa国内の現代美術館の中でもパイオニア的な存在である原美術館は、1979年に東京・品川に開館した。東京の主な美術館が立ち並ぶ界隈からは離れた場所に位置しているが、その所蔵品のすばらしさには目を見張るものがある。モダニズム建築を取り入れた建物も興味深い。
建物は、東京国立博物館を手がけた渡辺仁（1887-1973）の設計により、1938年に個人の邸宅用として建設されたもの。 20世紀初頭のヨーロッパ建築の影響を受けており、未来的でモダンな高層ビルやプレハブ住宅が多い中、昭和初期の建築を偲ぶ貴重な建物だ。最近リフォームを終えたところで、外観はそのままに、豊久将三による照明などが新たに加わった。
美術館では企画展のほか、講義や講演も開催し、コンテンポラリーアートの普及にも努めている。千点ほどの膨大なコレクションは、著名なアーティストから、次世代を担うアーティストの作品までと幅広い。日本の作品、海外の作品と限定して陳列するのではなく、現代的かつ挑発的でもある作品の流れを追いながら、広い視点で楽しめるようになっている。気軽に訪れやすい雰囲気を持っており、アレクサンダー・カルダーのモビールなど見応えがある作品に触れられる。
美術館を満喫した後は、敷地内に併設されている「カフェ ダール」で休もう。厳選された食材を使っており、ここでも質へのこだわりが伺える。 企画展のテーマに合わせた「イメージ・ケーキ」を提供しているので、是非とも試してほしい。

Translation: Chihiro Miyazaki, far away from the usual museum sites in Tokyo. While the museum’s collection of works are impressive, the building itself is an interesting insight into contemporary architecture.
Designed by Jin Watanabe (1887-1973) who also designed the Tokyo National Museum, the museum was originally constructed as a private residence in 1938 and was reflective of the early 20th century European architectural style. With the influx of ultra futuristic, modern skyscrapers and pre-fabricated houses, the Hara Museum is a rare example of early-Showa period architecture. Recently, the museum underwent a major renovation of its facilities which included a new light system by Shozo Toyohisa; it still retains in its original external architecture.
The Hara Museum frequently holds not only exhibitions but also lectures and performances that promote a broad range of contemporary art. The museum has a rich collection of contemporary art, boasting approximately a thousand pieces by leading and upcoming artists. Not limiting themselves to simply showcasing Japanese artists or Western artists only, their global outlook has ensured a constant flow of new and thought-provoking works. For the casual museum visitor, the museum provides an unobtrusive atmosphere to enjoy works like Alexander Calder’s mobiles.
After a day of roaming through the expansive Hara Museum, their in-house cafe serves up an equally excellent selection of food that reflects the quality of experience the museum strives for. The pièce de résistance of the Café d’art is probably its “Image Cake,” which is made specially to reflect the theme of the exhibitions. You can certainly have your cake and eat it at the Hara Museum.
