The architecture and design GALLERY・MA was established in October 1985 by TOTO, a manufacturer of water based products, to address social activities with the aim of improving the life and culture surrounding architecture水まわりの総合メーカー、TOTOが運営する建築とデザインの専門ギャラリー。建築を中心とした生活文化の向上、発展に貢献する社会活動の一環として1985年10月に誕生した。人や場所、時などの繋がりや関係性を表す「間（ま）」という日本特有の概念をギャラリー名に掲げ、世界的な建築家、注目の若手作家、あるいはプロダクト・デザインやグラフィック・デザインの分野など、暮らしに関わるあらゆる側面にフォーカスした展覧会を行っている。
建築の展覧会というと、図面や模型が並び、何やら難しい印象を受けることも多いが、TOTOギャラリー・間では、建築をより分かりやすく、身近に感じてもらえるよう様々な工夫を凝らしている。特に注目したいのが会場の空間構成だ。絵画や彫刻とは異なり、移動させることのできない建築をいかに「展示」するか — この問いに対しTOTOギャラリー・間では、展示空間ひいては展覧会そのものがひとつの「作品」となることを目指し、建築家の自由な発想を最大限に尊重した空間構成を行っている。中でも「第１会場（３階）」と「第２会場（４階）」とを繋ぐ階段を擁した「中庭」は、大小様々なオフィスビルがひしめく乃木坂の空のもと、時間帯や天候によって表情を変えるとてもリアルな空間であり、ここで展開されるサイトスペシフィックでテンポラリーな作品は訪れる度に新鮮な驚きを提供してくれる。21_21 DESIGN SIGHTや森美術館、国立新美術館といった六本木アート・トライアングルのすぐ外れに位置しているので、六本木アート散策のリストに加えてみてはいかがだろう。
なお、階下にはTOTO出版の直営書店「Bookshop TOTO」が併設されており、開催中の展覧会関連書籍の他、国内外の建築・デザイン・インテリアに関する書籍・雑誌や、こだわりの雑貨など充実の品揃えとなっている。こちらもお見逃しなく。

Text: Miki Matsumoto. The concept of ‘MA’, a unique Japanese philosophy that expresses the relationship between people, place and time, was selected as the name of this gallery. Various styles of exhibitions are being held by internationally renowned architects, young artists, product designers and graphic designers.
A typical architectural exhibition consists of drawings and models, giving a very difficult impression. TOTO GALLERY・MA puts effort into providing an easier understanding of architecture. The composition of the exhibition space is particularly interesting. How can architectural works be exhibited when unlike paintings and sculptures, they are not portable? To answer this question, TOTO GALLERY・MA aimed to use the exhibition space itself as a ‘piece of work’ and compose the space in a way that highly respects the concept of the architect. The ‘courtyard’ situated at the stairs between ‘venue 1 (3rd floor)’ and ‘venue 2 (4th floor)’ offers an especially fresh surprise as the site changes its atmosphere along with the time and weather under the sky of Nogizaka, a place crowded by office buildings. The Roppongi Art Triangle, consisting of 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT, Mori Art Museum and The National Art Center, Tokyo, is situated nearby- adding the gallery to the list of venues in that area.
In the basement of the gallery, ‘Bookshop TOTO’, a store directly managed by TOTO Publishings, offers a complete assortment of books, such as exhibition related publications, domestic & international architectural books and magazines. Here initiatives and projects are constantly pursued, promoted.
