Gallery Kawamatsu was founded in 1975, located Jinbo-cho where the biggest antique bookstore area. They have started introducing graffiti / street art since 2009. Currently Banksy is one of the main representatives of the street art. Through exhibitions and/or art fairs, their artworks become pop art and are quickly introduced to the next generation.古書の街、神保町に1975年開業し、国内外の版画や挿画本を数多く紹介してきたギャラリーかわまつ。現在はバンクシーらに代表されるスプレーペイントを用いたグラフィティ・アートをメインのひとつとして取り扱い、企画展やアートフェアを通して、次世代のポップアートとなりうる作品をいち早く紹介している。
グラフィティ・アートは元来、都市の壁面や標識などに描かれた「らくがき」だが、作品の質の高さ、ウィットに富んだ社会的なメッセージ性などから、新たな芸術運動のひとつとして注目を浴び、音楽やファッションなど他文化との交流も盛んに行われている。
ギャラリーかわまつでは、2009年に初のグラフィティ作家を紹介する展覧会「壁描礼賛 ザ・ウォール・オブ・グラフィティ展」で、バンクシー、ブレック･ル･ラット、スタンリー・ドンウッド、スタティック等の作品を展示したのを皮切りに、マーティン・ワトソンの日本初個展等、このジャンルに特化した企画展を多数開催。ウェブ上で作家や作品の紹介、販売も行っている。
展覧会に合わせてライブペインティングが行われる事も多く、店舗外壁には、ニックウォーカー、ヨーロピアン・ボブ、スタティック、マーティン・ワトソン等、来日した作家たちによる壁画が描かれている。

Text: Ayumi YakuraOriginally graffiti art is the illustration of signs, city walls, like “scribble”. High quality of artworks, contains a meaningful social message, a new art movement has drawn a lot of attention. The interaction of music, fashion and other culture are being more popular.
In Gallery Kawamatsu, the exhibition “The Wall of Graffiti” in early 2009 introduced graffiti artists. Starting with Banksy, Blek Le Rat, Standley Donwood and Static, and other artworks were exhibited. Martin Whatson’s first solo exhibition in Japan, it held a large number of exhibitions specializing in this field. Its website introduce artists and artworks, also art sales.
Exhibition has connected with many things, Live Painting, and the drawing on exterior wall of shop. Nick Walker, European Bob, Static and Martic Whatson, and many more have drawn on the walls.
