“ASAKUSA” located in the center of Taito-ku, Asakusa is a 40-square-meter reconstructed exhibition venue for contemporary art programs. Gallery curators manage it and advance curatorial collaborations.台東区浅草の中心部に位置する「アサクサ」は、40平方メートルの一般住宅を改築したプロジェクト・スペース。ギャラリー・キュレーターが運営し、キュレーター間のコラボレーションを推進している。
この物件は1965年に建てられ、端切れや余り物を使った修繕や、場当たり的な増改築が重ねられてきた平屋住宅街の一部。ブルー・アーキテクツ（チューリッヒ）の建築家・松本光索と、元スカイザバスハウス（東京）のキュレーター・大坂紘一郎の３ヶ月に及ぶ現場住込み期間に改装され、2015年に完成した。
改装作業は、『デザインを構想し実現化する』という方法から離れ、建築家とキュレーターそれぞれの視点から既存の要素に着目。意見を交換して決定する会話のプロセスを重視する事で、建設当時の文脈に応答し、その思考の痕跡が残された。
これまでにも、筑波大学・五十殿利治教授の協力による大正前衛芸術運動からMAVOのアーカイブ展、スカイザバスハウス協力によるメキシコ人作家ヨシュア・オコンの個展、政治的なメッセージを強調したトマス・ヒルシュホルンとサンティエゴ・シエラ展、ミクロトピアの形成を取り上げたオノ・ヨーコとリクリット・ティラバーニャの二人展など、研究者やアートギャラリーとの協働で多数の展覧会を実現している。

Text: Ayumi YakuraIt is part of a small residential property built in 1965, which repeated house repairs because of remnants and the haphazard extensions and reconstructions of houses. The renovation project took place in collaboration with architect Kosaku Matsumoto (Blue Architects, Zurich) and Koichiro Osaka, a former curator of SCAI The Bathhouse, Tokyo. during their three months of an onsite residency and was completed in 2015.
They focused rather on each existing element of architecture and curating than the embodiment of designs. By attaching importance to the process of conversations which exchanges opinions and makes a decision, the house responds to a context of when it’s constructed and thus holds the founders’ ideas.
They achieved many exhibitions in collaboration with researchers and art galleries, such as the archival exhibition of early Japanese avant-garde art before Taisho and MAVO in cooperation with Professor Toshiharu Omuka, The University of Tsukuba, the Mexican artist Yoshua Okón exhibition in collaboration with SCAI The Bathhouse, the exhibition of Thomas Hirschhorn and Santiago Sierra which emphasized a political message, and the two-person exhibition of Yoko Ono and Rirkrit Tiravanija which focused on the formation of microtopia.
