With an intention of becoming a venue to see the world through design, 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT was opened in March 2007 in Tokyo Midtown Roppongi which was created at the Defense Agency site「デザインを通じて世界を見る場所」との願いを込めて、「21_21 DESIGN SIGHT」は、2007年3月に六本木の旧防衛庁跡地にオープンした東京ミッドタウン内に誕生。デザイン施設として、デザイナーや企業の他、技術者、職人、研究者などデザインフィールド周辺で活躍するあらゆる人々が参加し、デザインの視点で様々な発見や提案を行っていくことを目指している。
三宅一生によって設立された21_21 DESIGN SIGHTで行われるプログラムは、デザイナーの佐藤卓、深澤直人の２名のディレクターと、デザインジャーナリストの川上典李子の１名のアソシエイトディレクターを中心に企画されている。オープン当初、第１回企画展として開催し話題を呼んだ「チョコレート」など、身近な題材をテーマにした企画展を通じて、社会に目を向け未来を思考する試みを行っている。
地上１階地下１階の傾斜する屋根が特徴的な建物は、安藤忠雄の設計によるもの。三宅一生の服作りのコンセプトである「一枚の布」に着目し、「１枚の鉄板」を折り曲げたような屋根をデザインした建築だ。
生活を楽しく豊かなものにする文化としてのデザインを日本から世界へと発信する場として、展覧会を中心に、トークやワークショップなど多角的なプログラムを行っている。

Text: Mariko Takei. As a design hub, it aims to offer various proposals and discoveries from the perspective of design, garnering the participation of various people involved in design such as designers and companies, engineers, artisans and researchers.
Many of the programs held at 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT established by Issey Miyake are planned by 2 directors including Taku Satoh and Naoto Fukasawa, and 1 associate director, a design journalist Noriko Kawakami. As their first exhibition “Chocolate”, directed by Naoto Fukasawa, attracted public attention widely, they have been trying to approach to the future society through holding exhibitions with universal themes.
Consisting of one ground floor and one underground floor, the building was designed by Tadao Ando, featuring an unique roof made from giant steel plates that slope gently down to the ground. Focusing on Issey Miyake’s concept in cothing design “A Piece of Cloth”, the architect designed the roof with “a single sheet of steel”.
As a creative hub to introduce culture that enlivens our daily lives, 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT showcases exhibitions and runs multiple programs such as talks and workshops.
