Singapore Art Museum (SAM) occupies a National Monument building that used to be the old St Joseph’s Institution1855年にセント・ヨセフ学院として建てられ、現在は修復された建物。そしてもうひとつクィーン通りを挟んで建つ、いかにも旧カトリック高校の校舎であったことが一目瞭然な保守的外観を維持したままの建物。どちらも、シンガポール美術館（SAM）の所有物である。その歴史的外観とは違い、この美術館は様々な現代アート作品や作家を紹介してきた。今回、そこでチーフ・キュレーターとして働くタン・シウリにインタビューをする機会を得た。彼女の視点を通して、シンガポールの新しい一面を探してほしい。
まずはじめに、自己紹介をお願いします。
シンガポール美術館（SAM）でキュレーターをしています。SAMはシンガポール、東南アジアの現代アート作品を中心に集めた美術館です。大好きなことをして生活していけるのは、とても幸運だと思っています。私の主な仕事は、SAMと別館の「SAM at 8Q」に来て下さる皆さんに見ていただく現代アートの展覧会を、同僚たちと共に企画することです。それぞれの展覧会がスタートするまでには多くの調査研究と話し合いを行っています。SAMでは、どのアーティスト、どの作品が次の展覧会に相応しいかを話し合う際、展覧会を素晴らしいものにするために、東南アジア各国を担当するそれぞれのキュレーターが専門分野の知識を活かしています（ちなみに、私はインドネシアを担当）。
シンガポール美術館を初めて訪れる人へのおすすめは何かありますか？
気負わずに来てもらえればいいと思います。SAMでは、普段皆さんがよく見るものとは全く違った絵画、彫刻など現代アート作品を展示しています。現代アートは表現形式や使用媒体の範囲、そして多くの場合アーティストが使う材料の選択が作品に重要性を持たせます。SAMの展覧会では、芸術の発展に関する年代順の配列やタイムイランに沿ったものよりはむしろもっと大きなアイディアで展開しています。SAMに来場する際には、どんどん探究し、質問し、多くのインスピレーションを得て欲しいと願っています！
作品のキャプションや展覧会のガイドには展示作品の情報が多く含まれていますが、もしより詳しい情報を知りたい場合は、毎日行われているガイドツアーに参加することができます。もし、企画側の話を聞きたいのであれば、キュレーターによるガイドを選ぶこともできます。こういったツアーでは、キュレーターは展覧会について「舞台裏」でどんなことが起きていたのかを皆さんに伝え、出展されている作品やアーティストについての質問にもお答えしています。
あなたが出会った、共に活動した注目の若手アーティストを紹介いただけますか？
フリール・ダルマ。彼の最初の個展「モヤング」での病的で美しく謎めいた完成された絵のシリーズに魅了されました。フリールの作品は、シンガポールとこの地域の閉塞した歴史の回復に関する研究について伝えてくれます。
タン・ズー・シー（メッシー・メスキー）は、私が企画した展覧会「イマジナリウム」で知り合うことができたアーティスト、イラストレーターです。彼女の風変わりで繊細なイラストが大好きです。自然界における私たちの活動の影響に関して、アートを通じて意識を高めようとする彼女の情熱に心動かされます。
シンガポールのお気に入りの場所、おすすめのレストランやカフェを教えて下さい。
ジョー・チャット（マレーの布地、手工芸品、アクセサリー、伝統衣装を取り扱うショッピングセンター）の近くは新しいものと古いものが融合した興味深い地域です。高級な最先端のカフェやレストランが街角に並ぶと同時に、この周辺には手つかずの古い雰囲気もまだ残っています。ここはプラナカン（15世紀後半から移住してきたマレーシアに根付いた主に中華系移民の末裔）文化を強く感じられる美しい建築や丁寧に保存されたショップハウスを探索するのには、建物の狭い通路を歩くことをおすすめします。また、籐家具などの伝統的な工芸品や事務用品、もちろん店ではビーズサンダルやケバヤ（伝統的な女性の衣服）などのプラナカンの工芸品やクエクエ（モチモチ食感のお菓子）も販売しています。もっと深く知っていくと更に驚きがあると思います。観音（慈悲の女神）に捧げられた寺院、本物のパナマ帽を扱う小さなブティックの他、アーネスト・ザハレヴィック（マレーシア、ペナンで遊び心のある壁画で有名なアーティスト）によるストリートアートにも出会うでしょう。
ジョー・チャットで飲食できる場所と言えば、ちょっと古いのですが、私が子供だった頃に流行っていて今も変わらずこの場所にある食堂、カヤトーストで有名な「チンミンチー・コンフェクショナリー」（204 East Coast Road）をおすすめします。イースト・コースト・ロードをもう少し下っていくと、プラウン・ミー（蝦麺）やンゴヒヤン （福建スパイス、五香を使った揚げ春巻き風料理）が味わえる「ビーチ・ロード・プラウン・ミー」（370 East Coast Road）も要チェックです。週末はドッグランとして盛り上がりを見せる空地に面した小さな屋台、テンベリン・ロード沿いの「テオチュウ・ポリッジ」（304 Joo Chiat Road）にもよく行きましたよ。この屋台は作る人が変わったと聞きましたが。ジョー・チャットでは、「シンポポ」の現代的でひねりのきいた伝統的なデザートを食べるのをお忘れなく。

Within these historical structures, SAM presents thematic contemporary art exhibitions, featuring works by artists from Singapore, Southeast Asia and Asia. We speak with the Co-Head of the Curatorial Team at SAM, Tan Siuli, to find out more about the museum, her work and some of her favourite spots in Singapore.
Please introduce yourself and your work.
I’m a curator at the Singapore Art Museum (SAM), a museum that focuses on contemporary art practices in Singapore, and Southeast Asia. I consider myself very lucky to be paid to do something I love! My primary job at SAM is to work together with my colleagues to put up the contemporary art exhibitions you see when you step into SAM and SAM at 8Q. The process leading up to each exhibition opening involves a lot of research and discussion. At SAM, each of the curators oversees a Southeast Asian country portfolio (I oversee Indonesia) so that when we sit down to discuss which artworks and artists might be suitable for an upcoming project, we each draw on our areas of expertise to contribute to the making of a great show.
What is the best way for a first-timer to experience Singapore Art Museum?
Come with an open mind. At SAM, we present works of contemporary art which often look very different from the art forms that most people are familiar with, such as painting or sculpture. Contemporary art comes in a spectrum of forms and mediums, and very often the choice of material used by the artist gives the work its significance. SAM exhibitions also revolve around big ideas, rather than a chronology or ‘timeline’ of artistic development. As such, when you visit SAM, come with an open mind to explore, to inquire, and hopefully, to be inspired!
While the artwork captions and our exhibition short guides contain plenty of information about the works on show, if you prefer more guidance you can always join one of our daily guided tours. If you would like an insider’s perspective, you could opt for our curator-led tours. During these tours, the curator of the exhibition will share insights on what happened ‘behind the scenes’, and you can also ask questions about the artworks and artists featured in the exhibition.
Could you introduce to us a remarkable young artist that you have encountered or worked with?
Fyerool Darma, an artist that will be presented at Singapore Biennale 2016. I was captivated by his series of enigmatic, brooding and beautifully executed paintings at his first solo show, “Moyang” – his works are informed by his research into and recovery of occluded histories from Singapore and our region.
Tan Zi Xi (aka ‘Messy Msxi’) is an artist and illustrator whom I had the pleasure to be acquainted with while working on “Imaginarium”. I love her whimsical and delicate illustrations, and am moved by her passion for and commitment to raising awareness, through art, about the impact of our actions on the natural world.
Please tell us your favourite places to visit and recommended restaurants and cafes in Singapore.
The neighbourhood of “Joo Chiat“. It’s an intriguing mix of old and new – while some parts have been gentrified with hipster cafes and bistros popping up at every corner, other parts of the neighbourhood still retain an untouched, old-world charm. There is a strong Peranakan presence in this neighbourhood, and I recommend walking around its many little lanes to explore the beautiful architecture and sensitively conserved shophouses. You can also find small shops specialising in traditional crafts and businesses, such as rattan furniture, and of course, shops selling Peranakan crafts (such as beaded slippers and kebaya) and kueh kueh. There are surprises to be had when you venture deeper in – apart from a temple dedicated to Kuan Yin (the Goddess of Mercy), you may also come across some street art by Ernest Zacharevic (renowned for his playful murals in Penang, Malaysia) as well as a tiny boutique specialising in genuine panama hats.
When it comes to where to eat in Joo Chiat, I am rather old school and will recommend the eateries that have been around since I was a child over the trendy new restaurants any day. Check out “Chin Mee Chin Confectionery” (204 East Coast Road) for its kaya buns, and further down East Coast Road, “Beach Road Prawn Mee” (370 East Coast Road) for the prawn noodles and ngor hiang. I used to have “Teochew Porridge” (304 Joo Chiat Road) along Tembeling Road as well, at a tiny stall facing the empty field which doubles up as a dog run on weekends. I’ve heard that the stall has changed hands though. And don’t leave Joo Chiat without stopping by Sinpopo to try their traditional desserts with a contemporary twist!
