ミズ・ミミとミスター・ポンは「ミミポン(MIMIPONG)」として活躍するデザインデュオ。彼らのプロジェクトMs. Mimi and Mr. Pong are a design duo under the collective title, Mimipong「地球上で一番寂しいところ」(The Saddest Place on Earth) には、私達が共に力を合わせ、悲しみを乗り越えたいと思うクリエイティブなアーティスト、ライター、ミュージシャンが集結！展覧会を行っているデュオに話を伺った。
あなたの住む街やその街での生活について教えて下さい。シンガポールでの暮らしは生活や仕事などにどう適してますか？
シンガポールは、小さくてかわいらしい街です。効率も良く、最近ではアートシーンの急成長を迎えてます。
小さな街にいて思うのは、いろんな場所に馴染みがあるので、いろんなことを簡単に済ませることが出来ます。その良い例は、私達の仕立て屋である65才の女性に偶然にも知り合えたことです。可愛らしい店舗兼住居に暮らすおばあちゃんなのだけど、彼女がミシンで手がけるフリースタイルの刺繍は素晴らしいです！大きな街では口コミでつながるのが難しいですが、彼女のような才能あふれる人と知り合え仕事ができることが気に入ってます。
シンガポールでお気に入りの場所を教えてください。
ミミ：スウィチンにある一筋の道路が気に入ってます。立ち並ぶお店は、一見したところ70年代のまま時がとまっているかのようです。大きな赤いプラスティックのバケツを店舗前に並べているお花屋さんもお気に入りの一つで、むしろ市場などで簡単に手に入るような普通の花を様々な種類扱ってます。その光景は素晴らしく、そのディスプレイから店主としての誇りが感じられるようなところです。店のサインボードは70年代製で、わたしが見た中でも最高のタイポグラフィを使用しています。
ポン：僕は、一般には封鎖されている荒れ果てた建物の中に侵入し写真を撮ることが大好きで、その場所のひとつにショートストリートにあるローチョー・ハウスがあります。静かで、使い古された素朴な空気を醸していて、むき出しのレンガ細工からは以前のここでの暖かく賑やかな暮らしぶりを想像してしまいます。過去のたあいもないスピリットを垣間見ることのできる近代の都市にはなかなかない稀な場所です。

Translation: Mariko Takei. Their latest project, The Saddest Place on Earth, gathers the creative artists, writers and musicians we all love to come together and conquer sorrow! Well, for the time being! We had a chance to talk with the duo about their exhibit which is currently running until January 11, 2009!
Tell us about your city, and about living in your city. How does Singapore suit you or your activity/work/lifestyle.
Singapore is a cute little city that runs rather efficiently and has experienced a burgeoning art scene of late. We think, being in a tiny city, we are familiar with the places, which makes it quite easy to get things done. A good example would be our accidental hookup with our 65-year-old seamstress, who is really a granny living in a lovely shophouse. She does some amazing freestyle embroidery on her sewing machine! We love how we’re able to work with such undiscovered talents, where contact through word of mouth would be harder to make in the bigger cities.
And…one more, tell us one of your favorite places in Singapore.
Ms Mimi: I love this particular stretch of road at Chin Swee, where the shops have seemingly come to a standstill since the 70s. My favorite belongs to a florist, who has rows of huge, red plastic buckets at its front. Each bucket is filled with a variety of rather common flowers you can easily get from any market… But you can sense the pride the owner still puts into the display, which makes it an amazing spectacle. The store’s signboard was made in the 70s and showcases some of the most beatiful typography I’ve seen.
Mr Pong: I love sneaking into and photographing dilapidated buildings that are cordoned off to the public. One fine example of this is Rochor House on Short Street. In its quiet, worn and unassuming state, it’s a lovely treat to feel the exposed brickwork and imagine how life there must be like once, filled with warmth and commotion. These are rare glimpses into the simple spirit of the past, which hardly finds place in the modern city.
