A Singapore creator, Clara Yee has several titles for her job such as an artist, designer, art director… etc. and works vigorously across wide range of areas. In the exhibition, “Singapore: Inside Out” which was held in August 2017 with great success, she worked not only as an artist but also as an Art Director and direct the entire exhibition.アーティスト、デザイナー、アートディレクター…さまざまな肩書を持ち、幅広い領域を横断して精力に活動するシンガポールのクリエイター・クララ・イー。2017年8月に開催され、大盛況のうちに幕を閉じた展覧会「シンガポール：インサイド・アウト」では、アーティストとしてだけでなく、アートディレクターとして展覧会全体のディレクションも手掛けた。
まずはじめに、自己紹介をお願いします。
私は、多様な専門分野を越境するデザインスタジオ「イン・ザ・ワイルド」の共同創設者の一人です。ロンドンのセントラル・セント・マーチンズを卒業し、ファッションやシアター、ブランディングといった様々な分野にまたがるメディアを活用した、ビジュアル制作のスキルを磨いてきました。またアレキサンダー・マックイーンやワーナー・ミュージック、バルビカン・ロンドン、シンガポール・ツーリズム・ボードといった数多くの企業との共同での制作も行ってきました。
そしてクリエイティブの専門家として、日本の矢野大輔や、メキシコのハシント・ディ・イェーといったアーティストとの、国際的な異文化交流プロジェクトにも携わりました。これらのプロジェクトは、メキシコ、ニューヨーク、ロンドン、北京、台湾といった様々な国に行くきっかけとなり、そこからグローバルな視点を得つつ、自身のデザインにおける考え方や思想をより活発にすることができたと感じています。
また、これまでザ・ストレーツ・タイムズの「30ライジング・スターズ・オブ・シンガポール・アンダー30」、ニーヨウ（NuYou）の「ネクスト・ビッグ・シングズ」、フォーブス・アジア版の「インオーギュラル30アンダー30」といった賞にも選出されました。
作品制作と並行して、企業のブランディングやステージデザイン、国内外での展示会におけるディレクション、多岐にわたって活動の幅を広げられていますが、こういった活動を行うようになったきっかけはどういったことにあったのでしょうか。
工芸や物質性といった多岐に渉る分野が交わる場所で行われる対話が、私にとっての制作の原動力である感じています。そして、アウトプットによって作品に制限がかかることをとても嫌っています。基本的に、私の作品の材料はいつでも同じで、時間と空間と感情、そして人間なのだと思います。
シンガポールに、ノマド・クリエイティブ・スタジオ「イン・ザ・ワイルド」を共同で設立されましたね。ここはどんな場所なのでしょうか。設立のきっかけや、現在の活動などをお聞かせください。
はい、そうなのです。「イン・ザ・ワイルド」というクリエイティブ・スタジオを、私を含む幾人かで創設しました。つい先日、シンガポールのリトル・インディア・ロードを離れ、ジャラン・ベザールという新しい場所に移ったんですよ。そこは古い商店の３階にある場所なのですが、自然光がとてもきれいに入ってくる部屋なので、大きなイチジクの木を室内で育てています。
私たちは、ブランディングのための、デザインにおける民族誌の研究や、ブランド体験におけるコンセプトのデザインまで、様々なプロジェクトに取り組んでいます。また、ちゃんとした医療を受ける事のできない子どもたちとのアートワークショップや、高齢者のためのアクティブなライフスタイル提案といったプロジェクトを、「グラティチュード・プロジェクト」と呼び、関心を持って取り組んでいます。
シンガポールでお勧めのスポットを教えてください。
私のお勧めは、
ネイティブバー – ここには面白くておいしいクリエイティブなカクテルのメニューが揃っています。
BKイーティングハウス(21 South Bridge Road) – サウスブリッジロードに位置するコピティアム（地元のコーヒーショップ）。遅くまでこのエリアのクラブで過ごした後、おなじみのバク・チョー・スワ・ミー（挽肉麺）ボウルを食べるのが定番。
またアーティストリー（17 Jalan Pinang）やブギス周辺でどんなの展覧会やアートイベント、ノイズミュージックのイベントが行われているかチェックしてみて下さい。

I am the co-founder of multi-disciplinary design studio in the wild. I graduated from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, London and has honed my image-making skills in mediums across disciplines (like fashion, theatre, branding) and industries, working with brands like Alexander McQueen, Warner Music, Barbican London, Singapore Tourism Board amongst others.
As a creative practitioner, I also work in collaboration with international artists such as Jun Kitazawa and Daisuke Yano (Japan), Jacinto Di Yeah (Mexico City), on international cross-cultural projects. These projects have taken me across the world from Mexico City, New York, London, Beijing to Taiwan and given me a global perspective that informs my work and design philosophy.
I am featured on The Straits Times’ 30 rising stars of Singapore under 30, NuYou’s Next Big Things, and is a Forbes Asia inaugural 30 under 30 honoree facing the face of the arts and culture industry.
During the creation of your own artworks, you have also expanded the range of activities widely such as corporate branding and stage design, directions of exhibitions in Singapore and overseas. What motivated you to do these activities?
I am are driven by the ongoing conversation in craft, materiality and convergent points of multiple sectors, and dislike being constrainted by the output. Fundamentally the materials I use are always the same; time, space, emotions and human.
You co-founded Nomad Creative Studio in Singapore. What kind of place is this? Please tell us about the history of its foundation and the current activities.
Yes! I co-founded a creative studio called in the wild. We have just moved to our new studio space in Jalan Besar, off the Little India road in Singapore. It’s on the third floor of an old shophouse and it catches the sunlight beautifully so we have a majestic ficus tree growing indoors.
We work on projects from design ethonographic research to branding and conceptual brand experiences. Work aside, we also dedicate time working on what we call gratitude projects on societal topics we are interested in such as art workshops with under-served children, and active lifestyle for elderlies.
Could you tell us your favourite and recommended places to visit in Singapore?
I would recommend:
Native Bar – They have an amazingly creative menu of cocktails that’s entertaining and delicious.
BK Eating House – A institutional kopitiam (local coffeeshop) off South Bridge Road, that’s the regular hunt for a comforting bowl of Bak Chor Mee Sua (minced meat noodles) after a late night out clubbing in the area.
