確実にクリエイティブシーンの発展が加速しつつあるシンガポールで、その賑わいの一旦を担っているのが「:PHUNKスタジオ」だろう。:PHUNK Studio is one of the leading creative teams that play an important roll to increase the creative vibration to its scene in Singapore which has been developed drastically and steadily in these days.1994年にアートスクールを卒業した仲間で始めたクリエイティブ集団「:PHUNKスタジオ」は、小さな国シンガポールから大きな世界という舞台で、数々のビジュアル表現を繰り広げる。
自己紹介と最近の活動について教えてください。
デザイン・アート集団「:PHUNKスタジオ」のアルビン・タンです。
:PHUNKスタジオは、新しくオープンするブティックホテルの内装デザインと、地下鉄MRTに新しくできるプロムナード駅での立体インスタレーションをちょうど終えたところです。また、現在「ユニバーサリティ」という:PHUNKスタジオが独自に取り組んでいる空想世界の創造を展開している作品集の次シリーズを手掛けていて、とても忙しくしています。作品集は僕たちが影響を受けたものや、個人的な理念や価値を再収集したものです。前回の「ニュー・ワールド」と題したユニバーサリティ展は、2008年11月に北京の798芸術区で開催されました。
シンガポールについて教えてください。その街で暮らすことや仕事をすることについてどう思いますか？
シンガポールは小さい国なので色々なところへ行きやすいです。タクシーに乗っていけば、国の端から端まで行くのに１時間もかからないかもしれません。小さいので何をするにもとても便利で好きですが、その小ささから国外で休暇を過ごしたり、海外の新しいものを探しに行ったり、国外へ出向く人が多いです。
僕はフェーバー山に隣接した地域に住んでいます。フェーバー山は港の側にある小さな山で美しい木々に囲まれたエリアです。ここから素晴らしい夕焼けを眺めることができます。また、街の中心部からも近いです。食材の買い出しには、伊東豊雄によるデザインの、比較的新しいショッピングモール「ビボシティ」に行きます。空気も空もきれいなこの街が大好きです。１つだけ不満があるとすれば、湿気の多い気候ですね。僕にはたまに暑すぎます。
シンガポールを例えた有名な「ディスニーランドで死刑」というフレーズを作ったウィリアム・ギブソンは、政府による市民の専制的支配に悩まされたそうですが、厳格な法システムの中でも、その仕組みさえ理解してれば、実はもっと楽しく過ごせるんだと思うんですよね。
シンガポールでお気に入りの場所を教えてください。
街から離れた、隠れた場所のようなデンプシー・ロードあたりのコロニアルは、アンビエンスな雰囲気が好きです。「P.Sカフェ」は静かな午後のミーティングにぴったりの場所です。この街には珍しい芝生の上のコルビジェ風の建物です。「タングリン・ビレッジ」にあるデンプシー辺りは、レストラン、ラウンジ、バーなどが集まりちょっとした迷路のようになっています。「ホワイトラビット」は、以前教会だったところを、スパ、ラウンジ、パブなどを含むレストランハウスに改装した場所で、タングリン・ビレッジと共に夜、友人と訪れたい場所です。
リトル・インディアは、キッチュなグラフィックや鮮やかでカラフルなお店やお家、複雑なオーナメントで溢れる面白い場所です。写真を撮り貯めておきなくなるようなところですよ。あと、オフィスのあるハジ・レーンにはユニークなお店やスタジオが立ち並んでます。ここに来たらボヘミアンな「ブルー・ジャズ・カフェ」にぜひ立ち寄ってほしいですね。
あと、最高においしい飲茶が食べられる秘密の場所を教えましょう。チャイナタウンの近くの「ディム・ジョイ」では、ボサノバを聴きながら美味しい飲茶が食べられます。ここのエッグタルトはオススメです！
シンガポールのクリエイティブシーンについてどう思いますか？
ここ10年くらいで飛躍的に成長していると思います。地元のクリエイティブな物事が海外の舞台にどんどん登場しています。広告、雑誌、ウェブサイトなどを通じて様々な都市で友人の作品を見つけたりするのは素晴らしいことだし、地元のクリエイティブシーンが、かつてないくらいに活気づいているという良いサインだと思います。シンガポールには新しいクリエイティブのパワーで溢れています。そして、それは起業家、エンターテイナー、専門家、生徒など様々な層からも伺い知ることができます。様々な産業の新しいビジネスの多くがデザインを主としたアプローチを試みているし、国自体でさえもストリートによく描かれているグラフィティ作品を消すのを止めたくらいです。
現在シンガポールではクリエイティビティの繁栄が感じられますが、それはデザインに対する認識が自然と広まることで段々と良くなっていくのでしょう。

Text and Translation: Mariko Takei After graduated from the art school in 1994, few friends from the art school formed a creative collective as presenting their own visual signature from a small country Singapore to the the larger platform of the world wide.
Please tell us yourself and your recent activity.
I’m Alvin and I’m from the design and art collective :Phunk Studio. We have just finished designing the interiors of a new upcoming boutique hotel and an sculptural installation for Singapore’s new MRT station at the Promenade.
The studio is also currently busy with working on the next series of Universality, which is a collection of artwork based on the creation of our own imaginary world – a re-collection of our influences, personal ethos and values. Our last ‘Universality’ exhibition, titled NEW WORLD, was held in November 2008 at the 798 Art District in Beijing.
Please tell us about your city, and how about living in your city for yourself/activity.
Singapore is very easy to get around because of its size, if you hop on a cab, it’ll probably take you less than an hour to travel from one end to the other. I like the fact that it is small as it makes work very convenient, but because of that, people tend to get out of the country alot too, on holidays or to look for new resources as most of it are imported.
I live in a part of the city next to Mt Faber, which is a small hill by the harbour, an area surrounded by beautiful trees and you can get to see very nice sunsets here. It is close to the city centre and I usually get my groceries from VivoCity, a relatively new shopping mall designed by Toyo Ito. I love this city as the air is clean and the skies are clear, the only complain I have is the humid weather, sometimes it gets too hot for me.
William Gibson famously coined Singapore as “Disneyland with the death penalty”, he was disturbed by the government’s authoritarian control over its citizens, but I’d like to think that you can actually have more fun within a rigid legal system, if you know how it works!
Please tell us favourite places in the city you live and work in, with the reason why you like.
I like the colonial ambience at Dempsey Road, which is tucked further away from town. P.S Cafe is the perfect spot for a quiet mid-afternoon meeting, a ‘corbusier-ish’ piece of architecture set upon a lawn is hardly easy to come by in this city. Dempsey aka Tanglin Village is a little maze of restaurants, lounges and bars you’ll enjoy getting lost in. The White Rabbit – a former chapel converted into a restaurant and House, Barracks & Camp – a mixture of a Spa, Lounge and Pub, are both great places to bring a friend for a night out.
Little India is an interesting place because you can find many kitschy graphic posters, brightly colored shophouses and intricate ornaments, a cool area to snap some photos for your visual diary. It is also a stone’s throw away from my office in Haji Lane, which has many quaint retail spaces and studios, be sure to pop by the bohemian Blu Jaz Cafe for a drink when you are here.
Oh, and here’s a little secret to the best dim sum in town, Dim Joy at 80 Neil Road, near Chinatown. They serve food as good as their bossa nova… do not miss out on the egg tarts!
What do you think about the creative scene in the city?
I feel the creative scene has matured tremendously since the last decade as we see more and more local creatives crossing over to an international platform. It’s great when you recognize your peer’s work on ads, magazines or websites from different cities, a good sign that local creativity is becoming more vibrant than ever. Singapore has a fresh and young creative energy that is felt throughout all levels from entrepreneurs to entertainers, professionals to students. Many new businesses from different industries are taking a design-led approach and the even the government has stopped cleaning up some pretty well-drawn graffiti in the streets.
There’s a current buzz about creativity and it can only get better as design awareness spreads itself!

Alvin Tan is part of :phunk studio, a creative collective in Singapore. :phunk has propagated a visual signature that seamlessly blends their diverse influences into a singular creative thought that never fails to revive itself in the ever-fleeting world of art, design and culture.
