多彩なバックグラウンドを持ち、シンガポールを拠点に活動を展開しているアイウェイ。自身のレーベル「シー・ユー・トゥモロー」で、Aiwei has been committed to designing and creating wide variety of things from accessories to books with her unique background, working in her own label “SEE YOU TOMORROW“. アクセサリーなど身につける物から、自主制作の本にいたるまで幅広くデザイン・制作を行っている。シンガポール独自の多人種、多文化を面白く、素晴らしいと言うアイウェイ。作品から感じる暖かさの裏に残るクールな感じは、このインタビューで何となく理解出来るのでは無いだろうか。
自己紹介と最近の活動について教えて下さい。
アイウェイと言います。生まれも育ちもボルネオです。18歳の時に故郷を去って、それからシンガポールで暮らしています。
ファインアートとアパレル関連のデザインや販売促進に携わってきたことが影響しているのだと思いますが、常に多分野に渡るプラットフォームでの作品作りを行っています。なんとなく、現在の活動や作品に影響を及ぼしていて、若い頃からまだ達成出来てない野望が自分の中にあるような気がしています。
普段の仕事の他に、自身のレーベル「シー・ユー・トゥモロー」の仕事も行っています。一度に色々なものをやろうとしたり、普段の仕事の後にしか自分の作品に時間をかけることが出来ないのが理由だと思いますが、作品はバラバラになってしまっていますね。
2005年に「シー・ユー・トゥモロー」を開始し、今ではもう１人の自分のような気持ちで作品やストーリーを作っています。私にとって、「シー・ユー・トゥモロー」は幸せな気持ちになったり、癒してくれたりする存在です。結構、無我夢中で出来ることの１つですね。ハンドメイドで作品を作ることもあります。自分のデザインに関しては、出来る限りハンドメイドでやりたいと思っていて、それが製作に時間が掛かるもう１つの理由でもあります。
もっとオブジェクトベースの作品を作りたいと思っていますが、常にメディア写真、イラストレーション、文章、ファッション、映像や音楽など様々な分野に興味を持つよう心がけています。自分のウェブサイトも作っています。色々なメディアで製作を行うことは、常に挑戦であり、退屈することは無いですね。
今は、シンガポールと香港で作品を販売しています。リクエストがあればカスタムメイドも行っています。加えて、次の作品の準備をしています。もうすぐ地元のレーベルから音楽作品を集めたアルバムをリリースする予定です。
シンガポールについて教えて下さい。またその街で暮らすことや仕事をすることについてどう思いますか？
シンガポールは非常に小さく、機能的でシステマチックな街です。移動に非常に便利で分かりやすいですから、こういう街に住めることは幸せですね。アートやデザインの産業はまだまだ大きくはないですから、皆お互い知り合いで、友達の友達みたいなことが結構頻繁にあります。個人的に、街の機能や様子を見ていると、あまり余裕が無い、特にメンタル的な余裕は無いところがあると思います。でも皆、街が中国、マレー、インド、ユーラシアなど色々な文化や人種で溢れていることを誇りに思っていて、大部分の人が方言も含めて２カ国語以上の言葉を話せます。会話の中でも、１つの文章で色々な言語や方言を使うことがよくあります。公用語は英語です。多くの言語を話せて理解出来ることは非常に面白いし有益だと思いますが、一方で、ある１つの言語に特化していないと、言語に関してのジェネラリストになってしまうのではないかと思うこともあります。
視覚的な言語は別にしても、見ている人に明確に作品を紹介するという意味で、アートやデザインにおいては言語が重要な役割を果たしていると思っています。でも、作品に「それを語らせたい」という人もいますからね。それはそれで非常に素晴らしいことだと思います。
10年以上この街に住んできましたが、時々なんとなく「間違った場所にいるんじゃないか？」と思うこともあります。この街で暮らして自分が体験したことや出会ったものが要因ですから、非常に主観的ではありますが。
シンガポールのお気に入りの場所を教えて下さい。
私の自宅兼スタジオは、ローウェル・ロードにあって、売春宿や変質者のおじさんが沢山います。７年間この街で暮らしてきましたが、毎晩、不細工で酷い声の女装したオカマが店から出てきては、客引きをしながら道でうろうろしています。この通りは、特に夜はすごいエネルギーですね。いかがわしいパブとかカラオケは言うまでもないですが、実はアーティストのスタジオや、デザインオフィス、ヘルシーなカフェやギャラリーも非常に沢山あります。ここに来れば、街の汚れた暗い側面を見ることが出来ます。道の景色を作っているのは、売春婦、ぽん引き、外国人労働者、ホームレスのおじさん、犬、ねずみ、酔っぱらいとパトロール中のパトカーなどなど。あんまり良い所では無いと思われるでしょうが、私にとっては面白い街です。

国内外の多分野に渡るアートやデザインの展覧会に参加。過去には、映像作品やパフォーミングアートの作成も行っていたが、「シー・ユー・トゥモロー」の開始以来、人生における優先順位を考え、現在では多分野に渡るプラットフォームでの作品作りを行う。また、過去には自費出版でポエムや散文を書いた手作りの本の制作、展覧会での発表を行い、地元で数々の賞を受賞。現在は、デザイン・ワークショップの開催も行っている。

Please tell us yourself and your recent activity.
I am aiwei. I was born and raised in Borneo. When I was 18 I left my homeland and since then I have been based in Singapore.
I usually work on a cross-disciplinary platform, that is probably due to the areas I was trained in which are fine art and later apparel design and merchandising. Subconsciously there might be other unfulfilled ambitions since young that influence my current activities and works too.
I am working on my label beside having a day job, the label is called SEE YOU TOMORROW. Juggling different things at the same time and due to the reason that I can only spare the after work time to work on my own things, my series/collections is quite sporadic.
I started SEE YOU TOMORROW since 2005, it is probably another self that I use to create and tell story. To me it is another way to feel happy and curing, to an extent it is an implementation of ecstasy too, sometimes.
I enjoy making things with my own hands. When come to my own design, I will handmade everything as long as I can handle, that is also one of the reason why I take time to produce.
I am more incline to object based works but I do always explore in different medium-photography, drawing, writing, clothing, video and music. I did my own website too. Working in between different medium is always my practice as I find it less boring.
Currently I am selling my stuff in Singapore and Hong Kong. I will do customisation too if people request, and made to order.
Other than that, I am also preparing for the next series of works, and going to release an album of my sound works/music under a local record label soon.
Please tell us about your city, and how about living in your city for yourself/activity.
This is a very small city, very clinical and systematic. It is good to live in a city like this because it is very convenient and easy to move around; the arts and design industry is not quite big so everyone almost knows everyone or maybe they are friends’ friends, stuff like that. The way the city functions and the way it is have left with not much space (mental space in particular) for explorations, I personally feel that. However, maybe it is easier to make connections too within your industry.
This city celebrates the diversity of different cultures and races: Chinese, Malay, Indian and Eurasians, so most of us knows more than one language, including dialects. Sometimes in one single sentence we speak, we might use different languages/dialects to form the entire sentence. The official language is English. It seems very interesting and beneficial to be able to speak or understand so many languages, but in a way I afraid we will become a ‘generalists’ in terms of language? If we are not strong in any particular language.
I believe language plays an important role in arts and design, the way to articulate your work in order to bring out to the audience, other than the visual language. Mm, but if you think you can let the work speak for itself, then I guess that’s ok too…very good indeed.
Having been staying in this city for more than 10 years, somehow a sense of displacement will still attack me once a while. All these are based on my personal experiences living here and what I encounter, so that’s quite subjective too.
Please tell us a favourite places in the city you live and work in.
My home/studio is situated at Rowell Road, a strip with a lot of brothel houses and weird pervert old uncles. I have been staying here for around 7 years by now. Every evening a lot of ‘lady-men’ (they are transvestites), which aren’t pretty at all and talking with coarse voice will come out from their units and stand along the shophouses, waiting for customers. This street definitely has a lot of energy, especially at night. Not talking about those dodgy pubs and karaoke, but there are quite a few artist studios, design offices, a vegetarian cafe and galleries around this area. You see the very dirty and dark side of a clean city here; sex workers, pimps, foreign workers, homeless old men, dogs and rats, drunkards and patrol police car made up the street scene. It isn’t sound that nice though, but it is an interesting street to me.

She takes part in various local and overseas arts and design exhibitions that are cross-disciplinary, that is what she have been doing till now; she made video works and performance art too but nowadays doesn’t do these anymore because ever since she started SEE YOU TOMORROW, and found it quite hard to have many too many priorities in her life. She also did online greeting cards for shift before. Other than that, she writes and used to self-publish her own writings and handmade the books, and had showed them in exhibitions, but she will never try to sell them. She wrote poems and proses, and received various awards back in her hometown. She is also involved in design workshops.
