上海のクリエイティブシーンをリードするオンラインマガジン、スマート上海。そのディレクターを務めるフエン・フインはウェイファインディング・サイネージをSmartShanghai is a webzine which features all sorts of creative scenes happening in Shanghai.手がける自身のデザインエージェンシー「Emba Studio」を経営もしている。６年前より上海でクリエイティブに携わっているフエンに話を伺った。
自己紹介と最近の活動内容について教えてください。
ヒエン・フインです。ベトナムで生まれシドニーで育ち、６年前に上海へ引っ越してきました。スマート上海のディレクターを務めつつ、ウェイファインディング・サイネージのデザインエージェンシーを運営しています。スマート上海のフードレビューのコーナーでは、東南アジアの特にベトナム料理を担当しレビューを書いています。スマート上海の仕事は、イベントやパーティに参加するなどして、いろいろな人と知り合えることがとても楽しいです。
上海について教えてください。ご自身や仕事をする上でその街で暮らすことについてどう思いますか？
ここ５年は特に上海で生活することはとても楽しいですし、香港、ニューヨーク、シドニーなどの大都市と比べても引けを取らないくらいエキサイティングなところだと思います。すごい早さで開発が進んでいるので何でもありますよ。過去３年くらいで、レストランやバーなども良くなり、たいていの料理は食べることができるし、DJイベントなども盛んです。上海に住んでいて思うのは、今僕は世界中でも最高にダイナミックで楽しい所にいるんだなと実感しています。でも街に緑が少ないしショッピングや散歩以外には屋外でのアクティビティも少ないので、パーティが好きな人にが楽しめるところなのかもしれません。こういう点からいうとビーチや公園で過ごすことのできるシドニーが恋しいですね。
上海で好きな場所を教えてください。また、選んだ理由も教えて下さい。
上海で好きな場所は、職場と自宅のあるエリアです。職場と自宅は歩いて５分くらいで、そこを繋ぐのは上海の素敵な通りのひとつ、新乐路です。多くのカフェ、レストラン、ブティックなどが立ち並んでいる通りです。毎日４回くらい新乐路を歩き、天気の良い日には飼っている犬の散歩も楽しいですね。また、この通りをサイドカーでドライブもします。サイドカーに犬を乗せて通ると、きれいな女性が振り向いてくれるのがいつもいいですね。
新乐路でおすすめのレストラン、カフェ、ブティックなどを教えてください。
お気に入りのレストランのひとつに、広東料理がおいしい小さなレストランがあるのだけど名前を忘れてしまいました。ボナカフェのすぐ隣のレストランです。規模が大きくてお勧めなブティックにソースがありますが、小さくても素敵なショップもたくさんあります。その中で特にいいのが、Gianmaとサイドウェイです。カフェのお気に入りのひとつは、桜花堂でケーキがとてもおいしいです。日本スタイルのバー・コンテレーションも特筆すべき場所ですね。小さいバーですが、いつも人で賑わっています。
上海のアートシーンについてどう思いますか？
上海でのアートやデザインシーンは動きが早いですね。でも市場がまだ追いついてない状況があり、世界の他の都市より遅れていると思います。上海にクリエイティブな人々が集まりつつありますが、デザインコミュニティやプロフェッショナルなグループが欠如している状況なので、まだまとまりがないと言えます。世界の他の都市と同じようなアートやデザインシーンを楽しむには、上海が越えなくてはならない課題は多くあるでしょう。

Text: Mariko Takei We interviewed Hien Huynh, a director of SmartShanghai as well as an owner of the wayfinding signage design agency “Emba Studio” in Shanghai.
Please tell us yourself and your recent activity.
MY Name is Hien Huynh, born in Vietnam and grew up and lived in Sydney before moving to work in Shanghai 6 years ago. I am currently the Director of SmartShanghai as well run my own design agency design wayfinding signage. For SmartShanghai I also do some food reviews on south east asian food especially Vietnamese food. With SmartShanghai a big part of my job is to attend events and partying, this at most times is quite exciting especially meeting new and interesting people, but after some time it can also be tiring.
Please tell us about your city, and how about living in your city for yourself/activity.
Shanghai is quite an exciting city to live in especially in the past 5 years and is continuing to be very exciting even comparing to most other cities such as Hong Kong, New York and Sydney. Its developing very fast and you can find almost anything here these days. In the past 3 years the restaurant and Bar scene has improved so much that now you can find just about any cuisine in Shanghai and To Djs regularly visit and play. Living in Shanghai makes me think that I am living in one of the most dynamic and fun city in the world with endless partying going on. ON the down side there is not much to do if you are not into partying, there’s very little green space and out door activities to do other then shopping and walking around the city. For this part I really miss Sydney, a place where you can spend you days on the beach or reading in the park.
Please tell us a favourite places in the city you live and work in.
My favourite part of Shanghai would have to be the area of my work and my house and all the bits in between. I am lucky enough to live within 5 minutes walk between my house and my office, the walk between the 2 places is through one of the nicer streets of Shanghai (Xinle Lu) where there are numerous cafes, restaurants and Boutiques stores. Each day I wolk this path at least 4 times, from going to and from walk to walking my dog, when the weather is good this is one of the favourite thing to do of the day, otherwise its riding my sidecar through the same streets. Its always very nice to have my dog in the side car and have beautiful girls looking at us when we ride or walk by.
In Xinle Lu area, what is your recommendation of any places including restaurants, cafes, boutiques, stores?
One of my favorite restaurant is a small local Cantonese place which I have forgotten the name, however it’s right next to Boona Café. One of the best and biggest boutique is The Source, however there are quite a number of small boutiques which are also very nice for shopping, two in particular is called Gianma and Sideways. As for Cafes, my favourite one is Sakura Do especially for cakes. One place worth mentioning is a Japanese style bar called Bar Constellation, this place is small and always busy.
What do you think about the art/design scene in the city?
The art and design scene is picking up very fast in shanghai, however the market is still quite a mess and very much behind other establish cities in the world. The city of Shanghai now have a lot of creative centres, however without a proper design community or professional group, its all still very fragmented and there is a lot of catching up to do before Shanghai can enjoy the same design and art scene as other major cities in the world.
