Established in the early autumn 2014, MAO SPACE debuts itself vigorously in Shanghai with its own perception, interpretation, and confidence upon contemporary art. Founded by the Purple Roof Gallery, who has curated Jing’an International Sculpture Project as well as other numerous significant sculpture projects, MAO SPACE has shown its prominent local strength and in-depth understanding in diverse art forms. 1920年代に毛沢東が居住していた古民家をリノベーションした「マオ・スペース」が、パープル・ルーフ・ギャラリーのメンバーによって2014年にオープンした。館内には毛沢東の直筆の書や器、写真などの貴重な資料が展示されているほか、現代アートを展示するスペースが設けられている。
マオ・スペースは、勢いのあるキュレーターや学者などと密接なコラボレーションを行いながら、将来に向かって前進する中国の現代アートの流れの中に存在し続けている。そして国際的に活躍するアーティスト達を中国に紹介することで、アーティストと社会や、美術館とマーケットの懸け橋となるような、コミュニケーションの基盤としても機能している。
パープル・ルーフ・ギャラリーは過去に、ジンアン・インターナショナル・スカルプチャー・プロジェクトをはじめ、数多くの素晴らしい彫刻やパブリックアートのプロジェクトを企画している。
