Moganshan Street in Shanghai hosts many credible contemporary galleries such as M50 and on the other side of the street on the second floor at No.97 you will find M97上海のアートスポット、M50のすぐ近く。莫干山通りを挟んだ向かい側、いくつかのギャラリーが連なっている間にM97ギャラリーは存在する。入り口を入り二階に上がるとギャラリースペースが広がっている。
M97ギャラリーは2006年にオープンした上海で数少ない写真を専門とするギャラリーの１つである。創設者でディレクターのスティーブン・ハリス自身も写真家で、M97ギャラリーをコンテンポラリー写真作品のプラットホームとして設立した。およそ300m2のスペースを持ち、30名を越えるアーティストをかかえている。
ワン・ニンダーやジャン・ジ、ミヒャエル・ヴォルフなどM97ギャラリーのアーティストは、それぞれに強烈な個性を持つ。彼らの視点や思考からつくり出された作品には面白さや不思議さがある。中国の歴史や現代社会をテーマにしたものから、個人や日常をテーマにしたものまで様々。不思議だが面白いもの、日常風景なのだが改めて見ると美しいもの、面白さと同時に恐さをもつものなどが展示されている。

M97 Gallery opened in 2006 and is one of the few galleries in Shanghai that specialize in photography. Founder and director, Steven Harris – himself is a photographer – established M97 Gallery as a platform of contemporary photography. The galleries 300sq m space embraces more than 30 artists.
Artists such as Wang Ningde, Zhang Ji and Michael Wolf known for their strong individual styles are represented at M97. The works, produced with their own unique take on themes ranging from China’s history, today’s society to more personal daily topics are mysterious but attractive, ordinary but beautiful, entertaining but scary at the same time.
