Bund1919 is an art area converted from an old spinning mill. As its name indicates, the mill dates back to 1919. Located far away from central Shanghai, the area has no skyscrapers, but lively shopping streets半島1919（Bund1919）は以前の棉紡績工場を改造し甦らせたアートエリア。「半島1919」という名前は1919年に工場が建てられたことに由来する。上海市の中心から遠く離れているため周辺には高層建築はなく、小さな商店や食堂が並ぶ賑やかな商店街。建物は当時の様子を残し、内部の壁には工場として使われていた頃のスローガンが書かれている。
現在中国人アーティストの長江、薛松、陳墻、曲豊国、黄淵青、日本人アーティストの関根伸夫、他に上海戯劇学院や中央美術学院がスタジオをかまえている。日本文化村も開設された。
かつての工場を利用したアートエリアというと北京の798が思い起こされる。798が自然発生的に始まったのに対し、半島1919は上海紡績グループと紅坊文化発展有限会社がおよそ２億人民元という予算を投じて再開発をしている。
将来的にアーティストの集まる場所にとどまらず、子供から大人を対象にしたアート教育、デザイン・ファッション・アニメーション・ゲーム・映像等の制作、誰もがクリエイティブな体験が出来る活動の場を目指している。また、デザイン事務所やアート関連企業のオフィス、アートとデザインの国際センター設立を予定している。
この大掛かりな計画はまだ始まったばかりで、総面積8.1万m2にも及ぶ広大な工場跡地はその10分の1しか利用されておらず、多くは改装工事中である。訪れた人々は半島1919工場跡地がアートエリアに生まれ変わってゆく過程を見ることができるだろう。

Chinese artists such as Chang Jiang, Xue Song, Chen Qiang, Qu Feng Guo, Huang Yuan Qing, and Japanese Nobuo Sekine reside in Bund1919. Shanghai Theatre Academy and China Central Academy of Fine Arts also have their studios. Japan Culture Village was also opened.
A famous example of an art area converted from old factories is 798 in Beijing. While 798 started spontaneously, Bund1919 was implemented by the government as an urban regeneration model, with an investment of over 8 billion CNY.
Not only an artists’ community, Bund1919 aims to provide everyone from children to adults with art education, hands-on experience of design, fashion, animation, games and films– where anyone can take part in creative activities. Design studios, art-related companies and offices, as well as an international center for arts and design are invited to reside.
This out-of-scale plan has just marked its take-off. Only one tenth of the 81,000 m² property surface is in use and the rest still remains under renovation. Visitors will witness the re-birth of the ancient mill into an art area.
