MK2 is a mid-century modern design café and furniture shop in the trendy Hyoja-dong area of Seoul. Situated just east of Gyeongbokgung Palace on a quiet street of galleries and used bookstoresソウル有数の観光名所である景福宮（キョンボックン）のすぐ隣にある落ち着いた外観のカフェ「MK2」。美術館や古本屋が建ち並ぶ静かな通り沿いでは他にもいくつかのカフェを目にするが、どこか懐かしさの残るモダンなデザインとくつろぎの空間が見事に調和した「MK2」がひときわ目を引く。
このカフェは家具屋も兼ねており、プロの写真家と現在も活躍中のデザイナーの夫婦がドイツ滞在中に収集した家具を取り揃えた家具屋として2008年にオープン。チャールズ・イームズが手掛けた椅子やヒースセラミック製の食器を始め、『これがあったからお店を開こうと思った』というオーナー自慢のファエマ社製のエスプレッソマシーンなどのヴィンテージ物が一カ所に集まった店内は、カジュアルなヨーロッパのカフェを思わせる。オーナー夫婦は、ソファや照明などの内装から食器にいたるまで定期的に入れ替え、気に入ったものがあればその場ですぐに購入することもできる。
家具から目を離してもう少し店内を見渡してみると、心地よい音楽の中でこれからのアートをリードしていく若い芸術家たちが夢中になって会話を楽しんでいる。キム・スヨンによる作品が店内を飾り、さらに奥の小部屋に行くと、来る人を待ち構えていたかのようにデザイン関連の本が立ち並ぶ読書スペースとなっている。店内の芸術性に気をとられている間に、クラシカルで家庭的なメニューの中から注文した、グリルチーズサンドウィッチ、キャロットケーキ、そしてラドラーというビールにレモネードを加えたドイツでポピュラーなビアカクテルが運ばれる。シンプルかつスタイリッシュな空間で楽しめる極上のエスプレッソはソウル観光のちょっとした一休みに最適だろう。

Translation: Takafumi Asaka MK2 is hardly the only stylish café in the neighborhood. But it stands out in its perfect pairing of high design and laid-back atmosphere.
A husband and wife team, one a professional photographer and the other a lighting designer, first opened the shop MK2 in 2008 with a collection of furniture they gathered while living in Germany. After finding a mint-condition Faema E61 espresso machine, dating from 1966, they expanded the shop’s offerings to a café. Now, a hodgepodge of vintage pieces – including Eames chairs and Heath ceramics – give the space the feeling of a casual, modern European café. The owners regularly update the interior and all of the pieces, from sofas to lighting to flatware, are available for sale.
Apart from the furnishings, at MK2 you’re likely to find a great soundtrack and a group of hip, young artists absorbed in conversation over coffee. Works by artist Kim Suyoung are on view and small nook filled with rare design books beckons exploration. Keeping with the café’s aesthetic, the menu offers well-executed versions of old-school classics – grilled cheese sandwiches, carrot cake, and Radlers, a mix of beer and lemonade popular in Germany. Grab an espresso from the friendly, unpretentious staff and enjoy MK2’s simple but stylish atmosphere – it’s irresistible.
