With natural texture like logs and bricks, Sapporo St. Michael’s Church was designed by a world famous architect Antonin Raymond in 1960. He is also known as a pupil of Frank Lloyd Wright丸太やレンガを使い、自然の風合いを生かした「札幌聖ミカエル教会」。世界的に有名な建築家である、アントニン・レーモンドによって1960（昭和35）年に設計された美しい教会だ。彼はフランク・ロイド・ライトの弟子としても知られている。レーモンドは日本に多くの建築物を残し、日本人建築家にも大きな影響を与えた。吉村順三や前川國男、増沢洵、ジョージ・ナカシマは彼の元で学んだ建築家だ。
そんな彼の作品が北海道で唯一みられるのがこの教会。窓の装飾にはノエミ夫人によってデザインされた日本の和紙が使用され建物のアクセントとなっている。また、レンガや砂利、木材はすべて北海道産の資材を使用している。西洋と北海道の融合による、こうした独特なデザインは、高い評価を受けている。
日曜日には礼拝が行われ、また、聖書会やゴスペルコンサートなどの様々な活動行事も通年開催している。また、教会には聖ミカエル幼稚園、国際青年寮も併設。開かれた教会としてキリスト教の普及に努めている。
この教会は東区・美香保という住宅街の中にあり、より教会を身近に感じることができる。教会の周りはたくさんのコスモスが咲き、秋にはコスモスをバックにした教会の写真を撮りにくる人も姿も見られる。2007年には「札幌市都市景観賞」も受賞している。

Text: Ayano Yamada. Raymond designed many buildings in Japan and had a big influence on Japanese architects. Junzo Yoshimura, Kunio Maekawa, Makoto Masuzawa and George Nakashima are famous Japanese architects from his office.
St. Michael’s Church is the only place that we can see his work in Hokkaido. The ornaments made of washi on the windows characterize the church. These are designed by his wife Nomi Raymond. Materials produced in Hokkaido, like bricks and gravel. Its outstanding design by mixing west and east fascinates people.
They have worship service on Sundays. They also hold many events throughout the year like Bible study and gospel concerts. Addition to the church, there are Sapporo St. Michael’s Kindergarden and Sapporo St. Michael International Young men’s House. As a church opened to people, they mission Christianity.
Located in residential area in Mikaho, we can feel the church more familiar. Since there are lots of cosmos flowers around it, people come here to take pictures of the church with them in Autumn.
