15km west from the centre of Sapporo, there’s an iconic mountain called Mt. Teine. 1023.1m in height, with a base of 2km in width, a depth of 6.5km and snow conditions well-suited for winter sports札幌市の中心部から西に15km、札幌のシンボルとも言える山、手稲山がある。標高は1023.1m、最大幅2km、奥行き6.5kmと台形に大きく、雪質もウィンタースポーツに適しており、北海道の代表的なスキー場の一つでもある。
コースや設備も充実。最長のコースでは約6,000mもあるが、上級者だけのためだけでなく、緩やかな傾斜で林間を滑る「ナチュラルコース」や、メリハリのある中級者向け「白樺サンライズコース」、札幌の景観を眺められる「シティビュークルーズ」など全15種類の多彩なコースで、経験、年齢層問わず、スキーヤーからスノーボーダーまで幅広い利用者のニーズに応えてくれる。
また、1972年の冬季オリンピックではアルペンスキー、リュージュ、ボブスレーの会場として使用され、現在も柳宗理がデザインした聖火台や、ボブスレーコース、五輪マークなどが残されているため、ウィンタースポーツを楽しみながらオリンピックの跡を探してみるのも一つの楽しみ方だろう。
手稲山は夏季になれば、市民の憩いの場として親しまれており、札幌テイネゴルフ倶楽部もオープンする。もっと手稲山を味わいたい人には登り応えがある登山コースもお勧め。

The course and facilities are also quite substantial. The longest course available is around 6000m, but there are also gentler slopes within forests that cater for less advanced skiers, known as the ‘natural courses’. There are also various intermediate courses such as the ‘Shirakaba Sunrise Course’, and courses which offer gorgeous views of the city of Sapporo, such as the ‘City View Cruise’. With 15 diverse types of courses to choose from, a wide range of courses exist to suit the needs of skiers and snowboarders, regardless of age or experience.
In addition, this was where the Alpine skiing, luge and bobsled events in the 1972 Winter Olympics took centrestage. Since tangible traces of the Olympics such as the platform bearing the Olympic flame, designed by Sori Yanagi, the bobsled course and the Olympics logo have been left behind, there’s double the fun in doing winter sports while searching for these signs.
Mt. Teine also opens golf courses in the summer, and works as a place where people from all walks of life can relax. For those who want to get a true taste of Mt. Teine, you should try the climbing course available. Every summer, open-air music events are also held at the mountain.
