Located in one of the coldest towns in Hokkaido, Rikubetsu-cho, where plunges to minus 30 degrees Celsius in the extremely cold season, Rikubetsu Astronormy and Terrestrial Science Museum極寒期にはマイナス30℃にもなる日本一寒い町、北海道陸別町にある、りくべつ宇宙地球科学館（愛称：銀河の森天文台）は、一般公開型天文台としては日本最大級となる115cm反射望遠鏡を備えた天文台。自然豊かで、寒さが空気を澄ます、その環境を活かし、1998年に建設された。
１階展示室では、銀河の森、オーロラ、宇宙の美しいパネル展示、宇宙探検コンピューターや70インチ大型モニターによる宇宙の体験学習ができる。２階は大型望遠鏡ドーム、小型望遠鏡観測室、大勢の人が星空を楽しめる屋上広場となっている。
天文台では惑星や月、遥か彼方の星雲や星団、銀河などさまざまな天体を見ることができる。運が良ければ国際宇宙ステーションや彗星が観測できることも。また、昼間でも晴れていれば明るい恒星を見ることができる。
さらに、近隣の「銀河の森コテージ村」では、６人用〜10人用までのコテージがあり、時間を気にせず別荘気分で満点の星空を存分に楽しむこともできる。寝具・調理器具・食器も装備され、LAN接続でインターネットの利用も可だ。

http://www.rikubetsu.jp/tenmon/ (aka Ginga no Mori Observatory) is an observatory equipped with a 115cm reflecting telescope, the biggest telescope as in the publicaly opened observatory. It was built in 1998 by taking advantage of the environment, rich nature and cold air.
On the ground floor there is an exhibition space showcasing beautiful photo panels of the Ginga no Mori, aurora and cosmic space. You can also learn about space with space exploration computer and 70-inch big monitor. There is a large telescope dome and small telescope observation room on the second floor, and the roof top if opened for visitors to enjoy stars above the sky.
The observatory offers you an experience to see various celestial body such as far-away star nebulae, star cluster, and galaxies. If you are lucky, there is a chance to observe the International Space Station and comets. If it’s sunny enough, you will be able to see bright stars even in the day.
There is Ginga no Mori Cottage Village nearby the observatory, where you can enjoy a full of stars shining over the sky by staying at one of the cottage for 6 to 10 people. Equipped with bedding, cooking utensils, and tableware, as well as LAN connection.
