旧小熊邸Oguma Residence
The former Oguma Residence was first built in 1927 in Sapporo at South 1 West 20. Originally the residence of Dr. Mamoru Oguma, it has become one of Sapporo’s landmarks藻岩山の麓にある青い屋根が印象的な小さな洋館「旧小熊邸」は元々、小熊捍（おぐままもる）の邸宅として1927年に中央区円山に建てられ、1998年に現在の場所に移築・復元されたもので、現在は喫茶店として生まれ変わり、市民に広く利用されている。
小熊捍は北海道大学の前身である旧北海道帝国大学の教授であり、トンボ研究の権威として知られる昆虫学者。札幌農学校在学中には、作家の有島武郎（ありしまたけお）と共に美術サークル「黒百合会」の創設や、札幌新交響楽団（豊平館を拠点に活動）の創立に関わるなど様々な分野で活躍し、札幌の文化的発展に大きく貢献した。
小熊邸の設計はフランク・ロイド・ライトに師事した北海道・札幌を代表する建築家、田上義也（たのうえよしや）によるもの。小熊邸は連続する大胆な屋根のデザイン、幾何学的な装飾やステンドグラスを用いた美しい採光など、ライトの影響を受けながらも北海道の気候に根ざした設計を行った田上の初期の代表作のひとつだ。
田上は、1930年代からはライト色からの脱却を目指し、人形劇場こぐま座（1972年）、札幌北一条教会（1979年）、札幌市教育文化会館（1980年）、本郷新記念館札幌彫刻美術館（1981年）、さっぽろ雪まつり資料館（1984年）、札幌市豊平川さけ科学館（1984年）など札幌を中心に、北海道の各地に数多くの作品を残している。
旧小熊邸は、札幌資料館、大倉山ジャンプ競技場、カトリック北一条教会、札幌芸術の森にある旧有島武郎邸、サッポロビール園、石山緑地（石山軟石採掘場跡）などと共に、「さっぽろ・ふるさと文化百選」にも選ばれている。
また目の前の藻岩山ロープウェイのほか、近くには札幌市水道記念館、ギャラリー門馬、N43などの施設もある。景色も良く散策にもおすすめなので一緒に訪れて欲しい。

Text: Ayano Yamada. In 1998 it was relocated to the base of Mt. Moiwa and was fully restored. Now converted into a coffee house, it has become a favorite of those who like to enjoy a quiet time alone over coffee.
Oguma Mamoru was an entomologist and PhD of Agriculture from Hokkaido Imperial University. He also greatly contributed to Sapporo’s culture scene. When he was a student of Sapporo Agricultural College, he founded the art circle “Kuroyuri Kai” with Arishima Takeo, a famous Japanese writer. Later he was concerned with foundation of Sapporo New Symphony Orchestra that is known for having their base in Hoheikan.
Oguma Residence was designed by Yoshiya Tanoue, who worked for Frank Lloyd Wright and was realized an leading architect in Sapporo. It is Tanoue’s old masterpiece that was designed suitably for the cold climate. We can see his influences from Frank Lloyd Wright in its roof design, geometric ornaments and beautiful stained glass.
But Tanoue started to make his own design since 1930’s not in the manner of Frank Lloyd Wright. He left his many works in Sapporo and Hokkaido such as Kogumaza (Little Bear Theater) (1972), Sapporo Kitaichijo Church (1979), Sapporo Education and Culture Hall (1980), Hongo Shin Memorial Museum Of Sculpture, Sapporo (1981), Sapporo Snow Festival Museum (1984) and Sapporo Salmon Museum (1984).
The residence is featured in the “100 Selections of Old Sapporo Culture” with Sapporo Shiryokan, Okurayama Jump Stadium, Catholic Kitaichijo Church, Arishima Takeo Residence in Sapporo Art Park, Sapporo Beer Museum, Ishiyama Ryokuchi and so on.
There are several nice facilities around the residence. Mt. Moiwa ropeway is located in front of it and we can go Sapporo Waterworks Museum, Gallery Monma Annex and N43 on foot. Since this area is on the hill, it is good to take a walk around there and enjoy the great scenery.
