Model Barn was built in 1877 as a barn of Farm No.2 of The Sapporo Agricultural College. It was named because William S. Clark, a president of the college1877（明治10）年、札幌農学校第二農場の家畜房として建設された「モデルバーン」。北海道の農業の模範となることを願って、モデルバーン（模範家畜房）と名付けられた。美しく広がる野原に佇む赤い屋根の木造家畜房は、開拓期のアメリカを思わせる風景。この農場は国の重要文化財や北海道遺産にも登録されている。地下鉄北18条駅から歩いて500mほど。
後の北海道大学の原型となった札幌農学校は、北海道開拓に伴い設置された教育機関。その中心的施設として知られる第二農場には現在９棟の建造物が保存されており、そのうちモデルバーンとコーンバーンは内部も公開されている。モデルバーンの内部には、明治初期に使用されていた輸入機械など、北海道の農業・畜産の歴史を語る多くの資料が展示されている。農場内には他にも札幌軟石を使用したサイロや大きな池などもある。
北海道大学のキャンパスはさっぽろ駅から地下鉄北24条にかけて広がっている。緑に溢れる構内はまるで大きな公園のよう。ポプラ並木やイチョウ並木、川も流れており、市民の憩いの場として広く知られている。構内のあちこちでランニングやサイクリング、絵を描く人の姿もみられる。モデルバーンをはじめ、総合博物館や植物園など様々な施設もあり、天気の良い日の散策はおすすめだ。

The beautiful scenery such as green fields and wooden barn with red roof reminds of America in the pioneer phase. This Farm was designated an Important Cultural Properties by the Japanese national government. It is about 10-minute walk from
Kita 18 jo Subway Station.
The Sapporo Agricultural College was an educational institution established when the pioneer of Hokkaido started. Later it was transferred to Hokkaido University. The Farm No.2 is known as the central facilities of the college and now keeps 9 buildings. Model Barn and Corn Barn of them also show their inside. Inside of Model Barn, we can see a lot of imported farming implements used in Meiji Era and important materials for history of agriculture and dairying in Hokkaido. In the farm, there are also a silo made of Sapporo Nanseki and a great pond.
Campus of Hokkaido University spreads from Sapporo Subway Station to Kita 24 jo Station. It looks like a huge park. There are Ginkgo Avenue, Poplar Avenue and an river. We can see people enjoy jogging, cycling and painting pictures. In addition to Model Barn, the campus has many other facilities like a museum and library. Taking a walk is probably the best way to enjoy the sunny day.
