洞爺湖Lake Toya

Lake Toya is the third largest caldera lake in Japan. “Toya Caldera and Usu Volcano Geopark” has been added to the list of UNESCO Global Geoparks Network as the first registered Geopark in Japan洞爺湖は日本で３番目に大きいカルデラ湖。その特徴的な地質により、2009年8月22日に洞爺湖有珠山ジオパークが日本で初めてユネスコの「世界ジオパーク」（地質遺産公園）に認定された。2008年には、ウィンザーホテル洞爺がG8北海道サミットの会場になったことで、世界的にも知られる地域となっている。
世界ジオパークとは、火山や断層などの特徴的な地質が、科学的にだけでなく、考古学的、生態学的、文化的にも貴重であると国際的に認定するもの。国内では洞爺湖有珠山の他に、糸魚川（新潟県）、島原半島（長崎県）が同時に認定された。世界中では19ヶ国、63地域が指定されている。（2009年8月現在）
洞爺湖は約11万年前に発生した巨大な火山噴火によって形成された。この噴火の規模は歴史的にも非常に大きく、その火山灰は北海道はもちろん、東北地方にまで及ぶほどだったと言われている。洞爺湖周辺の山脈地帯には、現在も活発な活火山・有珠山があり、この一帯が世界ジオパークに認定された。
洞爺湖周辺では様々なパブリックアートも楽しめる。洞爺湖の周囲43kmに渡って広がる「とうや湖ぐるっと彫刻公園」では58の野外彫刻が設置されており、北海道美唄市出身の世界的彫刻家、安田侃（やすだかん）の「意心帰」、「回生」をはじめ、国内外の56名のアーティストの作品が鑑賞できる。
また、湖畔にある「洞爺湖芸術館」では、1993年から2007年にかけて行われた公募展「洞爺村国際彫刻ビエンナーレ」の入賞作品約90点や旭川市出身の彫刻家、砂澤ビッキの作品などが展示されている。世界の現代彫刻の流れが一望できるミュージアムなので、洞爺湖に来た際には是非訪れたい。
その他にも、火山地熱を利用した洞爺湖温泉などの宿泊施設があるほか、カヌーやトレッキングなどの自然を利用した様々なアクティビティも楽しめる。

The Global Geoparks Network is defined by UNESCO as a territory encompassing one or more sites of scientific importance, not only for geological reasons but also by virtue of its archaeological, ecological or cultural value. The Itoigawa Geopark (Niigata) and the Unzen Volcanic Area Geopark (Nagasaki) are also resgistered as first Geopark in Japan. The Global Geoparks Network has 63 members in 19 countries and regions. Lake Toya was formed by eruption occurred about 110,000 years ago. Scale of the eruption was remarkably large and the volcanic ashes were carried to Tohoku region. Around Lake Toya, there are still many active volcanos such as Mt. Usu. They all are included with the Toya Caldera and Usu Volcano Geopark.
You can enjoy viewing various public arts around Lake Toya. There are 58 sculptures displayed in the Toyako Sculpture Park spread around the lakeside for 43km long, including Kan Yasuda’s ISHINKI and KAISEI among other national and international 56 artists’ works.
There is Toyako Museum of Art at the lakeside, where showcases works of an Asahikawa-born artist Bikky Sunazawa and various art works selected for Toyamura International Sculpture Biennale held for 1993-2007. Must check out when you visit Toyako.
In Toya, there are a lot of accommodations in Toyako Onsen (hot springs). You can also enjoy outdoor activities like canoeing and trekking.
