釧路市湿原展望台Kushiro Marsh Observatory

Kushiro Marsh was formed by rise and fall of the sea level with cool and moist climate 10,000 years ago in the ice age. It’s 30,000ha in size and the largest marsh in Japan一万年前の氷河期の氷河による海水面の上下降と、冷涼多湿な気候もあいまって釧路湿原はつくられていった。その広さは約３万ヘクタール（東西最大幅25km、南北36km）で、東京都心が丸々入ってしまう程の日本最大の湿原だ。
湿原の主要部はラムサール条約（特に水鳥の生息地として国際的に重要な湿地に関する条約）に登録され、特別天然記念物タンチョウをはじめとした水鳥の繁殖や休息の地となっており、大変希少な動植物が生息している。
釧路湿原を一望するのならば釧路市湿原展望台がおすすめだ。展望台は地元出身で前衛的な意匠で知られる世界的な建築家・毛綱毅曠（もづなきこう）の設計によるもので、丸みのある外観は湿原に群生する「ヤチボウズ」がモチーフとなっている。
吹き抜けの内部空間は、「胎内潜り」をイメージしたとされ、太古の自然、生命の起源を表現している。その世界観は、同じく設計を行った釧路市立博物館とは同じ年（1984年）に竣工したこともあり、対になっているとされている。
一階は「湿原のジオラマ」になっており神秘的な空間を演出、二階は展示室になっており、三階の展望台へと続く。展望台からはどこまでも続く広大な大地が眼下に広がり、そして湿地の上を長く蛇行した釧路川を見ることができる。
また展望台の周囲には北斗遺跡へと繋がる遊歩道があり、湿原を散策できるようになっている。全長2.5kmで所要時間は一時間。７箇所の広場とサテライト展望台がある。車いすで通ることも可能だ。

The main part of the marsh is designated as a Ramsar Convention (Convention on Wetlands of International Importance Especially as Waterfowl Habitat) site and is home to rare animal species like the Red-crowned Crane.
Kushiro Marsh Observatory is recommended to enjoy the view. It was designed with motif of Yachibozu (a kind of tussock) by Kikou Mozuna (1941-2001), who is a famous architect from Kushiro and known for his avant-garde works.
In 1984, inspired by tainai-kuguri (crawling through a narrow gap), he designed the stairwell space to represent the nature and the origin of life. He also designed Kushiro City Museum in the same year.
The first floor is the space named “the diorama of marsh” and takes you to mystic world. The exhibition booths are on the second floor and the observatory room is on the third floor. You can see the cast extent of marsh and meandering rivers on it.
At the observatory, there is a esplanade leading to the Hokuto Site. It’s 2.5 km in length and takes about one hour to get the site. On the way, there are seven small parks and satellite observatories.
