フゴッペ洞窟Fugoppe Cave

Known as cave ruins of the Post-Jomon Period (Yayoi – Kofun Period) discovered in the town of Yoichi Hokkaido, the Fugoppe Cave is the one of the largest cave ruins in Japan北海道余市町に続縄文文化（弥生〜古墳時代）の洞窟遺跡がある。フゴッペ洞窟と名付けられたその遺跡には約800点を数える刻画（岩に刻まれた絵）があり、その規模は国内最大級である。フゴッペ洞窟は1950（昭和25）年に発見されて以来、その保存調査を行っており、1953（昭和28）年に国指定史跡に指定された。現在は、毎年４月中旬から12月上旬頃まで洞窟内部の公開を行っている。
原始的な記号のような図象だけでなく、岩面彫刻（有翼人像、人物像など）が見つかっているのは、国内では、フゴッペ洞窟と小樽市手宮洞窟（慶応２年発見）の２つのみである。北東アジアに分布するものと類似点が多く見いだされてはいるが、その関連性は分かっていない。同時に発掘された土器や石器などから2000〜1500年前の遺跡とされている。
海を渡って来たアムール人説、金田一京助の発表した悪戯説や、北海道に居住していた先住民族など、さまざまな考察も行われたが結論は出ていない。確かなのは、太古からここに居住していた人がいたということだけだ。多くの謎に満ちた洞窟だが、謎が多いほどその魅力に惹き付けられるのではないだろうか。歴史の謎解きをしに訪れてみてはどうだろう。

Since its discovery in 1950, the Fugoppe Cave has been under the research for conservation, and designated as a national historic site in 1953. Currently it’s opened for public for viewing inside the cave from the middle of April to the beginning of December.
In the cave, there are not only primitive and symbolized pictogram, but also found petroglyph such as winged figures, which were considered as one of the only two national discoveries in Fugoppe Cave and Temiya Cave in Otaru (discovered in 1867). There are many similarities to the figures found in the Northeast Asia, but not much about the relationship is known. They are considered to be remains of 1500-2000 years ago, researched from earthenware and stone tools discovered at the same time.
Various theories have been put forward for the discovery of Fugoppe remains, including the Amur theory, the prank theory that Kyosuke Kindaichi believed, and the Hokkaido’s indigenous people theory, but it remains inconclusive. One thing for sure is that there is people lived in this place from the ancient times. Veiled in the mystery, Fugoppe Cave is a place where attracts many people’s attention, and where you can enjoy delving into the mystery
