石彩の教会Church of Stone

Located at the site of Nidom Hotel in Tomakomai, Hokkaido, Church of Stone was designed by Itami Jun Architecture Co. Ltd in 1991「石彩の教会」は、1991年に伊丹潤建設研究所が設計した北海道苫小牧のホテルニドム内にある石の教会。敷地内には、石の教会「フィデスペルペテュア」と、パシフィック・ミュージック・フェスティバルの創設者としても知られる世界的な音楽家レナード・バーンスタインが愛した、木の教会「ペレカムイ」が対となって建てられている。
四国の銘石・庵治石で作られた教会の石積みはイサム・ノグチのパートナーとしても有名な石匠・和泉正敏の手で、ひとつひとつ積み上げられたもの。高さ23メートルの八角形の鐘楼や回廊、壁のゆるやかな曲線を描く石積みが自然と調和して美しい。
教会の内部は、庵治石と木の宝石と呼ばれるシルバーパインという木材とのコンビネーションが素晴らしく、丸太組の構造はアントニン・レーモンド設計の札幌聖ミカエル教会を彷彿とさせる。シンプルだが重厚な雰囲気を兼ね備えた芸術性の高い教会だ。
500万m2もの広大な森が広がるニドムは、北海道有数の名門ゴルフコースとしても知られている。豊かな自然をモチーフにしたホテル内のフレンチレストラン「ニンクル」などで旬の厳選素材を堪能することもできる。場所は新千歳空港から車で15分ほど。北海道に来た際にちょっと寄り道してみるのもいいのではないだろうか。

At the site, there are 2 churches built in pairs: one is Fides Perpetua Church – a stone church and the other is the Leonard Bernstein Perekamui Church – a wood church which was named after a world-famous composer, Leonard Bernstein who was a founder of Pacific Music Festival.
The stone masonry was made out of Ajiishi, a famous kind of in the Shikoku region in Japan and the stone work was done by Masatoshi Izumi, a well-established stone worker who has a good partnership with Isamu Noguchi.
Inside the church, the combination with the Ajiishi stone masonry and silver pine wood work is fantastic. The structure that was made of pine wood logs remineds us of St. Michaels Church Sapporo designed by Antonin Raymond. It has artistic beauty, with the 23-meter hight octagonal bell tower, alter and gently-curved masonry walls.
The Nidom Hotel is also famous with the high grade golf course, spread out in the 5 million squre meters vast woods area. You can enjoy seasonal French deishes at a French restaurant Ninkur. It is located near New Chitose Airport Terminal, which will take 15 minutes by car. Great to visit if you plan additional trip outside Sapporo city.
