On a quiet street east of Susukino, one is privileged to stumble upon Provo – or, if you know the right people, to hear about it from a friend. With it’s faded couches, attic-like space札幌、すすきのの東側。閑静な通りを歩いている時に偶然出会えるかも知れない。もしくは友達からその名を聞いたことがあるかも知れない。その店の名前は「プロボ」。色褪せたカウチ、屋根裏部屋を思わせる空間、そして無造作に作り付けられたロフト。プロボは大人のための秘密のクラブハウスだ。
常連客は実に店に馴染んでおり、誰がスタッフで誰が客なのか見分けるのが難しいほど。プロボのオーナー吉田龍太は、札幌ではレコードレーベル「シナプス」の主宰として知られる人物である。多くの国際的なDJを札幌に紹介し、ヨーロッパや南アメリカを旅して新しいアーティストを探すことを仕事とする彼の関心は、「プロボ」を札幌で一番のライブスペースにすることへと繋がっていった。
毎週ローテーションで音楽を選んでゆくのは、人気のDJや吉田氏が発掘した新進のDJたち。最先端の音楽空間であるだけでなく、プロボは心地よいオーガニックのバーでもあり、私たちに新鮮な驚きを与えてくれる。不定期に行われるジャズライブ、美味しい料理、手づくりのジンジャーエール。さらには地元のデザイナーが自分の作品を持ち寄って開くフリーマーケットまで。
プロボの売りは音楽だが、筆者がいちばん好きな時間帯は静かな平日の夜である。カクテルと、タイで料理を学んだというシェフのグリーンカレーを味わいながら、優しいBGMを楽しむ。いつでも何か面白いことを企んでいるお洒落なスタッフとおしゃべりすれば、この店の一員になりたいと思うみんなの気持ちがよく分かるはずだ。

In fact, the regular customers are such insiders that at times it’s tough to decipher who does or doesn’t work there. Provo’s owner, Ryuta Yoshida, is well known in Sapporo for his record label Synapse, which brings many international DJ’s to the city, and for his travels throughout Europe and South America in search of new artists. His interests have combined to make Provo one of the premier spaces to see live music in Sapporo.
Each week you will find a rotating selection of DJs from all over the world – both renowned acts and up-and-coming ones discovered by Yoshida. In addition to being a hip venue, Provo is also a comfortable and organic bar that offers some surprises: the occasional jazz performance, an excellent menu, house-made ginger ale, and even a flea market, with local designers selling their wares.
Though Provo’s focus is music, my favorite time there is on a quiet weeknight evening. One can enjoy a cocktail and a spicy bowl of green curry – the chef studied cuisine in Thailand – to a soundtrack of mellow tunes. Chatting with the fashionable staff, who are always up to something interesting, it’s easy to see why you’d want to be part of the club.
