Your test writing at the stationary shop may become a part of her drawing art before you know it. Okoimatsu is an artistあなたが文房具屋のペン売り場で試し書きした線が、知らないうちに彼女が描くアート作品の一部になっているかもしれない。幼少期から大学まで東京で育ち、その後ロンドンでアートを学んだオコイマツは、他者が何気なく試し書きした線を集めて模写・転写することで様々な都市の風景を描きだすアーティスト。現在は北海道札幌を拠点とする彼女に、作品と札幌の街についてお話を伺った。
アーティスト名の由来は何でしょうか？
北海道のアイヌ民族の女性の名前をお借りしました。「マツ」というのはアイヌ語で女という意味があり、日本の女性名の最後につく「子」にあたるそうです。また、私の母親の旧姓が小松（コマツ）と言いまして、母方の祖父がやっていた自動車修理工場の地面にロウやチョークで落書きしていた幼い頃、無意識に目に入っていた「工場内の風景や道具工具が山積みになっている様」が、今思うとイメージの源泉になっているなと感じるので、この名前にしました。
文房具屋でペンの色や太さを確かめた後の試し書きは、誰かに見せるために書かれたのではなく、普通は捨てられてしまうものですね。オコイマツさんにとって試し書きの線の魅力とは？
試し書きの線の中には様々なドラマが見えるんですよね。見せると思って書いていないので、油断していて、大胆だったり繊細だったり時には文字になっていなくても達筆感が出ていたり…。「書く」と「描く」の間のような線が一番多くて、そこには他の場所では見られないような、些細な無意識の痕跡が見えるように思います。その様は、街の中、特に混雑する駅やターミナルなどでの人々の動きにも重なって見えてくる、ような気がしています。街や人々の動きの痕跡や予感を感じさせてくれるモチーフが、私にとってはイメージを膨らませるインスピレーションの源泉です。
現在の拠点、札幌で集めた試し書きによる作品「超じゆう戯画、もしくは札幌」は、これまでとは違い、カエルやウサギを擬人化した日本の古い絵巻物「鳥獣戯画」を模しているそうですね？
札幌の某大型文房具店では、試し書き用の紙がレジのレシート用紙のようにロール状の巻き取り式になっていて、それを見ているうちに「絵巻物のようなだな」と思えてきました。それで鳥獣戯画を結びつけてみようという、少し実験的な試みでした。鳥獣戯画のシーンに見えるように、様々な線を試し書きから探しては、ウサギの耳の一部、カエルの背中の一部、と当てはめて絵を作っています。
札幌でお気に入りの場所を教えてください。
スティーブンズ・ステーブル（西区小別沢149-2）：札幌の小別沢という場所にある乗馬クラブです。札幌駅から20分という好立地。オーナーはスティーブン・ホジャティさんと奥様のアヤさん。お二人で「馬と共に暮らす」というスタイルを実現されていて、白樺の立つ自然の中に馬３頭と犬１匹、厩舎やベンチなども全てが絵になる風景です。ヨーロッパに居るのかと錯覚する程。乗馬は、周囲の山をゆったりめぐるトレッキングコースと、馬場内でのレッスンコースがあります。他の乗馬クラブと比べると手頃な価格で楽しめると思います。キッズ用イングリッシュキャンプなど英語に触れられるイベントもあり。
ダラハン（中央区南1西13 三誠ビル1F）：本格モンゴルレストランです。室内一杯にゲル（モンゴル式住居）が建ててあり、壁一面にモンゴル衣装が飾ってあります。モンゴルの方が経営されていて、とにかく本格。ラム肉が苦手な人はキツいかもしれませんが、そうでなければスゴク楽しめると思います。私はホーショラという揚げ餃子をツマミにウォッカ、がお気に入り。お酒がすすんだら衣装を試着してコスプレタイム。（強制ではないです笑。着ない人の方が多いと思います）完全にモンゴル旅行気分を味わえます。
ファビュラス（中央区南1東2 NKCビル1F）：アートと食と素敵な雑貨屋さんが融合したカフェです。天井が高くゆったりした空間にビンテージの家具やソファが並ぶカフェで、ガレットやパスタやオシャレなスイーツなどが楽しめます。モーニングからディナーまで家庭的フレンチ。雑貨屋さんもビンテージから最新のモノまで、センスがいい！と唸ってしまう品々が沢山あり、展示壁面には一月ごとに違うアーティストの作品が飾られます。観葉植物の使い方がとにかくオシャレで、大好きなカフェの一つです。
これからの目標を教えてください。
札幌はとにかく雪景色が素晴らしいので、都市と雪をテーマにした作品も面白いのでは、と思っています。雪が降ると、足跡やタイヤ痕や車の泥水で汚れた色の変化や…痕跡フェチとしては（笑）獲物が豊富ですので。ロードヒーティングによって少し溶けた雪の跡などもすごく面白いので、未開拓のジャンルですがアースワーク的なインスタレーションも、いつかやってみたいです。

I interviewed to the Hokkaido-Based artist about her works and Sapporo.
What does Okoimatsu mean?
I borrowed the name of Ainu tribe in Hokkaido. “Matsu” means female in Ainu as Japanese females often has “ko” in the end of the names. My mother’s maiden name is Komatsu and her father ran the auto-repair shop. I used to doodle often with wax and chalk on the ground of the shop and “view of the factory and piles of tools” came into my eyes. Because that experience is the source of my image, I decided to use this name.
Test writing for checking the color or thickness of the pens at the stationary shop are usually not for shown to somebody but thrown away. What is the attractive point for your about such lines?
I can see varied drama in the lines of test writings. Because people don’t think those are not shown in public, they are relaxed and bold. Writings are sometimes sensitive and artistic and even it isn’t a letter. Lines between writing and drawing are mainly seen and I can find the trace of trivial unconsciousness which I can’t see anywhere. Motives which make me feel the traces and presentiment of movement of city and people are the source of inspiration.
Your work “caricature over freedom, or Sapporo” made with test writing collected in Sapporo, which is your base now is different from past works. You copied “Choju-giga (the Japanese old scrolled cartoon in which frog and rabbit were drawn as humans.)”. Did you satirize anything?
Good question (laugh). I didn’t think about satirizing. One of the big stationary shops in Sapporo had roll paper for test writing and it inspired me of the picture scroll like Choju-giga. I experimentally connected the paper roll and picture roll. I looked for lines suitable for Choju-giga. A part of rabbit’s ears, a part of frog’s back, and so on.
Could you please tell us your recommendation in Sapporo?
Steven’s Stable (149-2 Kobetuzawa, Nishi-ku). It’s a riding club located in Kobetsuzawa, Sapporo where just 20 minutes away from Sapporo station. The owner is Steven Hojjati and his wife, Aya. As they implements the lifestyle of “living with horse”, all of landscape such as 3 horses and a dog in the nature with white birches, stable and bench looks like a painting. It is enough to illusion whether in Europe. There are 2 ways to ride as trekking course to tour the nature and lesson course in the riding ground. It’s possible to enjoy riding with an affordable price. In addition, kids can partake some events to learn English such as camp.
Darahan (1F Sansei Bld., South 1 West 13, Chuo-ku). A genuine Mongolia restaurant. As set up “Ger” (Mongolian dwelling) fully in the space, Mongolian costumes are decorated with wall-to-wall. Mongolian runs there and everything is native. I think it might be harsh for whom dislike lamb, but enjoyable for others. My best combination is “khuushuur”, a fried-dumplings with vodka. Once it goes well with alcohol, it’s the cosplay time to try the costumes; surely not a forced. This restaurant definitely makes you feel fun like traveling to Mongolia.
FAbULOUS (1F NKC Bld., South 1 East 2, Chuo-ku). A cafe featuring art, meal and miscellaneous goods. You can taste galette, pasta and sweet at the spacious cafe with lined up vintage furnitures and sofas, and the high ceiling. It’s a homemade French cuisine from breakfast to dinner. The selection of miscellaneous goods are also polished and stylish including vintages and contemporary, and monthly art exhibition is held on the wall. Anyway the use of foliage plants is so neat for me and it’s one of my favorite cafes.
Please tell me your future project.
Sapporo has fantastic snow view. I’m thinking a piece themed with city and snow. People left footmarks and tyre marks on the snow and those change the color with muddy water. There are so many games for me who makes fetish of traces (laugh). It’s very attractive to find traces after the road is heated and snow is melted. It’s uncultivated genre but I want to try making installation like earth work.
