冬の凍てつく白い世界に暖かみを与えてくれるような「ザ・タワー」は、充実した設備が整い、楽しく快適な旅を約束してくれるに違いない。森に囲まれたレストラン街「フォレスタ・モール」では、魅力的な食事が楽しめる。周辺の自然を楽しみたい人は、レストラン街に直結した両面ガラス張りのスカイウォークを散歩してみてるのはどうだろう。鳥の好きな人には、ザ・タワー内の「アザリア」がオススメ。大きな窓から降り注ぐ太陽の光が心地よく、ゆったりと読書しながらコーヒーを楽しめる。窓の外には鳥専用のテーブルが設置されているので、ガラス越しに野鳥がエサを啄む姿を見ることができる。
アルファリゾート・トマムでの冬の楽しみは、スキーやスノーボードはもちろんのこと、「アイスビレッジ」は必見だ。-20℃という厳しい寒さの中で、レストランやバー、氷の教会などが綺麗なイルミネーションを施され幻想的な景観を作り出している。「ホワイト・フォレスト・レストラン」では、氷でできたテーブル席につきながら温かな食事をとることが可能だ。夏のイチオシは、夏期限定でオープンする「雲海テラス」だろう。また、安藤忠雄の設計による「水の教会」での挙式は多くの人の憧れとなっている。
都市での生活から離れて体を癒したり、満喫した時を過ごしたり、年間を通して楽しめる場所がトマムにはある。

The distinctive twin towers with its wildly colourful façade was rebuilt by Klein Dytham Architecture (KDa), established by Royal College of Art graduates Mark Dytham and Astrid Klein in Tokyo at the start of the 90s. Having designed other memorable buildings in Japan such as Moku Moku Yu, a timber mixed-gender bathhouse set amidst pine forest at the Risonare resort in Yamanashi and the R3 Ukishima in Okinawa, KDa has earned a reputation for being cutting-edge and forward-looking in their designs, creating idiosyncratic architectural works that help shape the sophisticated built landscape of Japan.
Adding a touch of warmth to an otherwise frosty world in winter, ‘The Tower’ contains many facilities to make your stay a comfortable and enjoyable one. Surrounded by a lush green forest, dining at Foresta Mall, a restaurant complex in the woods, will prove to be a charming experience. Those who enjoy walks among nature can consider strolling along the glass-sided sky walkway connected to the complex. Bird-lovers can hang out at Azaria Coffeehouse, where sunlight streams in through big windows while you sip your coffee and read a book. As a bird table is located outside the window, you can also view wild birds that come to feed there from behind the glass pane.
The highlight of a trip to Tomamu Alpha Resort should be the Unkai Terrace, also known as the ‘sea of clouds’. Open during the last weeks of June to the last weeks of September, the terrace is exactly what it claims to be. A gondola ride to the top literally brings you to a divine, breathtaking vantage point from which a fluffy, misty blanket of clouds roll away to reveal a serene union of sky, mountain and earth. The warm, golden tones of the sunrise or sunset also help to paint a pretty picture of Tomamu’s luxuriant, paradise-like landscape.
A must-visit in winter, aside from the wonderful ski and board courses, is the Ice Village. At harsh temperatures of -20C, illuminated igloos housing restaurants, bars and even a chapel glint and sparkle quietly in the night. At the White Forest Restaurant, you can sit on furniture made from blocks of ice as you warm your tummy with nabe or cheese fondue sets, before stopping by the ice bar for strong alcoholic drinks to keep you warm, uniquely served in glasses of ice. If you’re on holiday with your sweetheart and are swept up by the winds of romance, pledge your love for each other at the ice chapel, temporarily set up in a forest next to the water chapel which only opens in the summer.
If you’re visiting in summer, do take some time out to view the Chapelon the Water , designed by award-winning architect Tadao Ando. A full-glass building which opens outward onto nature as if into infinity, you can spend a short time there as part of a silent conversation between nature and humanity, an essential experience symbolic of Tomamu’s position as a haven away from city life.
