Known for the historical buildings, Otaru is a port city where you can feel laid-back moments. There is a shop opened in 2006, where the owner took 5 years to complete renovating the 90-year-old building歴史的建築物が立ち並び、ゆったりとした時間の流れる港町・小樽。元々、ケーキなどの箱工場として築90年以上経っている建物を、2001年から一人でリノベーションを開始し、５年後の2006年にオープンしたお店がある。
「Uguis」（ウグイス）と名付けられたその建物は、オリジナルの家具などを販売するインテリアショップと、鳥が巣作りするように廃材を持ち合わせて作ったことにちなんだ「Bird Cage」（バードケージ）というカフェから成っている。
店のリノベーションのみならず、オリジナル家具やインテリア商品、旬の食材を使用したケーキやパン、フードを含むカフェのメニューも、店主の佐藤孝範氏が全て一人で作っている。手作り感溢れるお店だが、そのひとつひとつのクオリティの高さには驚かされる。
さらには、ロゴや、ショップカードなどのグラフィックデザザインも自身で手掛けている。これだけのセンスと才能があるにも関わらず、本人はいたって自然体で、『好きにやっているだけなんです。』という。自身のショップをオープンする前は、デザイン関係ではなく、福祉系の仕事をしていたという異色の経歴でもある。
小樽、札幌市内にも佐藤氏がインテリア設計を手掛けた店舗がいくつもある。小樽へ行ったらここを拠点に、彼の手掛けたショップをゆったりと廻って散策するのもいいだろう

Named as Uguis, the building consists of an interior shop, which sells original furniture, and a cafe called Bird Cage, which was made with waste materials.
The owner Takanori Sato works on by himself not only renovating the shop but also making original furniture and interior products as well as seasonal food menu for the cafe. It is a handmade shop, yet with a stunning quality.
Sato also works on the graphic design such as logo and shop cards. With a talented sense, he is very spontaneous saying “I just do what I like.” He doesn’t have any experience on design. Before opening his own shop, he has been working on welfare.
Besides Uguis, there are shops he has worked on designs in Otaru and Sapporo. It will be nice to add a list visiting such shops around the city of Otaru.
