メトロクス札幌Metrocs Sapporo
札幌の個性的な店が点在する円山エリアに1993年にオープンした、プロダクトデザインショップ「メトロクス」。もともと、当時では珍しいヴィンテージものを取り扱うショップとしてオープンしたが、現在では店内の３つのスペースにMETROCS is an interior brand and features high-quality design products in Europe and Japan.国内・海外から仕入れた様々なデザインのチェア、テーブル、キッチン用品、テーブルウエア、インテリアグッズなどが所狭しとディスプレイされている。
メトロクスでは人気のインテリアアイテムの販売以外にも、オープン当初からリプロダクトにも力を入れている。1999年くらいに日本で初めてジョエ・コロンボを紹介することとなった照明器具「Spider」のリプロダクトを始め、現在では、バウハウス最後の巨匠とも呼ばれるスイス人アーティスト／デザイナーのマックスビルによるバリエーション・シリーズのポスターや、ジャパニーズ・モダンを代表するデザイナー、渡辺力によるカートンファニチャーシリーズのスツールなどを復刻展開している。
また、バウハウスの思想のもとデザインされるドイツの有名オフィスファニチャー「ウィルクハーン」、アメリカン・モダンの代表、イームズデザインの家具を生産することでお馴染みの「ハーマンミラー」、ジャスパー・モリソンやマーク・ニューソン等のデザインを展開する「マジス」などの世界中のインテリアブランドを北海道での代理店として取り扱っている。
2000年からオンラインショップをいち早く展開し、当時は首都圏からの顧客が非常に多く、いわば海外ファニチャーブランドの国内代理店のような役目を果たしていたメトロクス。その顧客からの要望に答えるかのように、2003年には東京・新橋に店舗「メトロクス東京」を構え、旧ダンボール工場を改装した広い店内には国内・ヨーロッパの数々のプロダクトデザインを豊富に取り扱っている。
札幌、東京とも、両ショップでは、エキシビションを不定期で開催している。この２回目となった企画展では、日本の伝統工芸にフォーカスしている若手アーティストの作品の展示・販売を行うなど、国内外問わず幅広くオリジナリティ溢れるプロダクトデザインを紹介している。

Text: Mariko Takei What METROCS means by “high-quality” is the product that has a strong will and pride of the designers and manufacturer, much more good design, material, and sophisticated technique. The will and pride in the works will be handed down to posterity, leading one of masterpieces in the field.
Their mission is to send high-quality products selected through the viewpoint of METROCS to the world as well as to all over the country, with those collaborators who agrees with their idea. Other mission is to reproduce discontinued masterpieces buried in oblivion, and to create innovative design products.
In this mass production age, they can’t tell customers all ideas by only means of displaying goods. So they regularly hold an exhibition featuring a particular subject, providing history or background behind the works by in connection with designers and makers around the world. They hope this proposal could help customers to experience the fascination of design.
