ノアの箱舟Noah’s Ark
Noah’s Ark was built originally as a Chinese restaurant, designed by a British architect Nigel Coates and Dan Sekkei Architects in 1988ノアの箱舟は、イギリスの建築家ナイジェル・コーツが弾設計と共に、1988年に元々はチャイニーズ・レストランとして設計した建築物。札幌の繁華街・すすきのから少し外れた鴨々川のほとりに位置し、船をモチーフとした奇抜なデザインが特徴。現在は北海道の厳選食材を使用したメニューを提供する炉端焼レストランとなっている。
ナイジェル・コーツは、ダグ・ブランソンと共に、1985年にブランソン・コーツ・アーキテクチャーを設立。以来、イギリスのジェフリー・ミュージアムをはじめとする博物館やショップ、レストランなどを数多く手掛ける世界的な建築家だ。大胆かつ独創的で、ストーリー性を持つコンセプチュアルな作品が多い。
弾設計は、同時期にノアの箱舟の近くに「北倶楽部」を設計、バーの内装はイラク・バグダッド出身の建築家ザハ・ハディドが手掛けたが、現在は経営が変わり、残念ながらその内装は消失している。弾設計は、イタリア建築界の巨匠アルド・ロッシと共に福岡のホテル「イル・パラッツォ」の設計も手掛けている。
コーツは、他にも旧小樽ホテル（現ホテル・ヴィブラント・オタル）の内装を手掛けたが現在は大きく改修されておりその面影はないので、北海道で作品として見れるのはこのノアの箱舟だけだ。近年札幌も都心の再開発が進み、次々と価値ある建造物が失われつつある。解体・改修される前に見ておきたい建築のひとつだろう。

Text: Tamami Kadowaki. Located near Kamokamo River in a bit off of Susukino area, the building was uniquely designed like a ship. It is now used as a local restaurant serves Hokkaido’s authentic grilled dishes.
Ever since established Branson Coates Architecture with Doug Branson in 1985, Nigel Coates has been one of the world-famous architect, whose works include Geffrye Museum, shops and restaurants. Many of his works are bold and creative, narrative and conceptual ones.
One of works of Dan Sekkei Architects is a bar called Kita Club, located near Noah’s Ark, and its interior design was done by Zaha Hadid. Unfortunately the interior design was renovated due to the change of the owner. Another work includes Hotel Il Palazzo in Fukuoka, designed with a notable Italian architect Aldo Rossi.
There is another work of Coates’s interior design done in formally Otaru Hotel (currently Hotel Vibrant Otaru). As it has been hugely renovated, it’s not what it used to be. Noah’s Ark is his only work in Hokkaido. Must visit once before the valuable building are going to be lost under the urban development.
