Nissho Kanda (1937-1970) is a painter who is known for his unfinished painting of a horse. Opened in Shikaoi-cho in the vast nature of the Tokachi region in 1993, Kanda Nissho Memorial Museum of Art exhibits works絶筆となった未完成の馬の作品で知られる画家・神田日勝（1937〜1970）。北海道の大自然が広がる十勝地方の鹿追町に平成5（1993）年に開館した神田日勝記念美術館では、神田日勝の80点を超える所蔵作品を入れ替え、展示を行っている。
具象的で質感を感じさせる細かなタッチ、陰影や遠近感を排除した平面的な作風が日勝の特徴。ベニヤ板にペインティングナイフを使って描いており、画面からはみ出すほどのダイナミックな構図は、見る者に迫ってくる。
代表作である、「室内風景」（1970／北海道立美術館収蔵）をはじめ、1966年以降は色彩豊かで、情報化や大量消費などの社会事象を投影した作品が描かれていく。時代と常に対峙していた日勝は日本のポップアートの先駆者とも言えるだろう。
北海道の開拓には欠かせなかった馬。鹿追町で育ち、そこで亡くなった神田日勝も馬を愛し、農業に勤しむ傍ら生涯を通して馬を描き続けた。描き残された馬の作品から日勝は何を表現したかったのか、様々な空想が広がってくる。

The feature of his oil paintings is his representational style with texture and sensitive touch, and his plain surface finish without shades and shadows and perspective. Painted on a piece of plywood using a painting knife, the dynamic composition of his work appeals to the viewer.
After 1966 Kanda started to work on colorful paintings that reflect social affairs such as informatization and mass consumption, as shown on one of his representative pieces, “Okunai fukei” (Indoor Landscape, 1970, Collection of Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art). As he always confronted the age, it can be said that he is a pioneer of the Japan’s pop art.
Horses were necessary for developing Hokkaido. Born and lived in Shikaoi-cho until his death, Nissho Kanda also loved horses and continued to paint horses throughout his life, while working on farming as well. You will have various imagination through viewing his pieces as what Kanda wanted to express by painting horses.
