おおば比呂司記念室Hiroshi Oba Memorial Museum

Well-loved by the Japanese, Hiroshi Oba is famous for his tender, thoughtfully inquistive drawings that cause a warm glow in the heart. His single-panel manga drawings and illustrationsほのぼのとした温かみのある画風で、多くの人に愛された漫画家・画家、おおば比呂司。一コマ漫画やイラストレーション作品は、テーマやモチーフも幅広く、雑誌の挿絵や食品のパッケージ、イメージキャラクターなどジャンルを横断して全国各地で展開されている。
1921年札幌で生まれたおおば比呂司は、1988年に急逝するまで精力的に創作を続けてきた。1995年に札幌市資料館に開設された「おおば比呂司記念室」は、より多くの人におおば比呂司の作品を観てもらいたいという家族の想いから札幌市に寄贈された296点の内、約50点の作品を展示している。作品の原画や、飛行機のプラモデルや人形などのコレクション、愛用品などに加え、この記念室でしか見られない作品も展示。また、作品制作の様子を伝えるアトリエも再現している。
記念室へ入るとまず目にする、鮮やかな色が印象的なイラスト「航空70年」をはじめ、おおば氏が大好きだったという「飛行機シリーズ」や、絵本の原画、広報誌「ほっかいどう」の表紙シリーズ、晩年、オランダに４年間移住した際に訪れたヨーロッパ各地を描いた「ヨーロッパの風景」シリーズなど、おおば氏が漫画家・画家として歩んできた軌跡を辿ることができる。
札幌には、おおば氏が広告イラストを手掛けた天ぷらの老舗「蝦天」や「ニドム」に原画が展示されている他、北海道名物「わかさいも」などをはじめとする食品パッケージなど、道内の様々な場所で作品を見ることができる。これらを見つけたらその絵にも注目してみてほしい。

Translation: Mariko Takei have a universal appeal, covering a broad spectrum of themes and motifs, from the modern fascination with aeroplanes to dreamy scenery, and transcending genres from illustrations for magazines and food packaging to character images.
Born in Sapporo in 1921, Hiroshi Oba kept painting until his death in 1988, having never forgotten his love for his hometown. With his family’s idea to showcase his works to the people in Sapporo, Hiroshi Oba Memorial Museum was opened in Sapporo Shiryokan in 1995, acquiring 296 original drawings, a collection of airplane models and dolls, as well as favourite possessions, which were donated to Sapporo city from the Oba family. An artist’s studio has even been constructed, complete with bookshelves, a desk lined with sketches and his memorabilia, to reproduce the feeling that you are in an artist’s creative work environment.
When you first enter the museum, you’ll be enchanted by the vibrant and vivid colours of Oba’s illustrations. His work captures very radiantly the different hues of life, but always in a charming, surreal, quirky manner, such as the smallness of human beings compared to the jumbo sizes of aeroplanes, Aladdin on a flying envelope instead of a carpet, and beautiful cities set against a backdrop so bright yellow it’s almost unreal.
After checking out the gallery, do visit the original goods shop, which displays a wide array of cute products with Oba’s illustrations on them, making for truly memorable souvenirs.
