2008年、この冬のローマを飾る一大アートイベントと言えば、ガゴシアン・ギャラリーのオープンがある。ラリー・ガゴシアンは、アメリカ人、アルメニア人ハーフのアート・ビジネスマンそしてアートに対する鋭い洞察力から、One of the most important art-event in this Roman winter is the opening of the Gagosian Gallery. Larry Gagosian, the american-armenian art-businessman, known as “the Shark” for his incredible intuition has presented his new space in the “centro” of Rome.またの名をシャーク（鮫）として知られている。彼がローマのチェントロ（中心街）に新ギャラリーをオープンした。ギャラリーの位置するフランチェスコ・クリスピ通りは、「チッタ・エテルナ～永遠の都」（ローマの通称）の中心部にあたる、スペイン坂とヴェネト通り、そしてバーベリーニ広場のちょうど中間に位置する雰囲気ある小さな小道。
1921年に建てられ、以前は銀行として使われていたビルに750m2のそのギャラリーはある。中でも目を引くのは、縦23メートル、横13メートル、天井の高さは6メートルある卵型ギャラリー。吸い込まれるような白で統一されたその空間に、来場者は思わず特別な空気を感じるだろう。
このギャラリーのオープンに合わせて、サイ・トゥオンブリー（Cy Twombly）による「Three Notes from Salalah～サラーラからの３つの言葉」 (2.5m x 3.5m、2005‐2007年作) が世界初公開される。
世界に全部で７ヶ所（ニューヨーク３、ロサンジェルス１、ロンドン２）あるガゴシアン・ギャラリーも、ローマがヨーロッパ大陸では初。79年にガゴシアンが最初のギャラリーをオープンし、世界のモダンアートギャラリーの中心的存在になったのは一昔前にも感じる。このプロジェクトはローマ出身の建築家フィロウツ・ガルドによってデザインされ、イギリス建築事務所クルソ・セント・ジョンによって実現された。
ガゴシアン・ギャラリーの歴史は、過去29年間に多くのアーティスト達の作品で色とりどりに飾られた。そのアーティストの中には、バスキア、ピカソ、アンディ・ワーホルの他、アリギエロ・ボエッティ、セシリー・ブラウン、フランチェスコ・クレメンテ、ウォルター・デ・マリア、アルベルト・ジャコメッティ、リチャード・ハミルトン、ダミアン・ハースト、ウィレム・デ・クーニング、ジェフ・クーンズ、ロイ・リキテンスタイン、マリオ・メルツ、ピーノ・パスカーリ、エド・ルシェ、ジェニー・サヴィル、リチャード・セラ、デイヴィッド・スミス、フィリップ・ターフェ、ロバート・テリアン、ピオトル・ウクランスキー、フランチェスコ・ヴェッツォーリ、クリストファ－・ウールがその長いリストのほんの一部として代表される。

Via Francesco Crispi is a narrow street, a stunning place in the earth of the “città eterna”, right in between the “Spanish Steps” and Via Veneto and piazza Barberini.
750 squared meters in an historical building dated 1921, previously used as a bank. The incredible feauture is this oval room, 23 meters of length, wide 13 meters and with celings 6 meters high. An unforgettable wrapping white effect, well planned to embrace the visitor.
Three Notes from Salalah by Cy Twombly is the opening exhibition: three paintings (2,5 by 3,5 meters each, acrylic) realized between 2005 and 2007 and for the first time shown to the public.
With this Roman base, the first on European continent, the spaces are seven so far. Three in New York, one in Los Angeles and two in London.
It seems long time ago when in 1979 was opened by Larry Gagosian the first Gallery, considered one of the main galleries for modern and contemporary art in the world.
The project here in Italy was devolved upon the Roman architect Firouz Galdo, and the English company Caruso St John.
Gagosian Gallery worked and organized exhibition during those 29 years with the most important artists in the world, contemporary and historical names: Jean Michel Basquiat, Alighiero e Boetti, Cecily Brown, Francesco Clemente, Walter De Maria, Alberto Giacometti, Richard Hamilton, Damien Hirst, Willem de Kooning, Jeff Koons, Roy Lichtenstein, Mario Merz, Pino Pascali, Pablo Picasso, Ed Ruscha, Jenny Saville, Richard Serra, David Smith, Philip Taaffe, Robert Therrien, Piotr Uklanski, Francesco Vezzoli, Andy Warhol, Christopher Wool are just few names of the long list.
