Parisian Parc de La Villette is not merely a park but also an animated place, with cultural structures of all dimensions disseminated on its 55 hectares. The City of Science and Industry (Europe’s largest science museum) is one of the most famousパリの公園ラ・ヴィレットは、ただの公園ではない。55ヘクタールもある広大な敷地内に人工的な建築物やオブジェが点在する活気ある場所。有名なヨーロッパ最大の科学産業博物館や、ラ・ヴィレットにはクリスチャン・デ・ポルザンパルクの建築による「音楽都市」など様々な音楽施設や常設のサーカステントも兼ね備えている。有名建築家ジャン・ヌーヴェルによる巨大なシンフォニー・ホール、ラ・フィルハーモニー・デ・パリ（交響楽ホール）も2014年にオープンする予定だ。
ラ・ヴィレットは建築家バーナード・チュミによって1984年～1987年に設計された。ジャック・デリダの脱構築主義建築のコンセプトに基づき、ラ・ヴィレットはチュミによって「収束と接続」の２つのキーワードが表現されている。訪れる人々は、広大な自然空間を散歩し、リラックスした雰囲気の中で刺激的な発見をする事ができる。運河で分けられたこの公園は、運河に沿った通りと、南北に伸びる通りの二つがメインストリートとなっている。映画のフィルムリールを思わせる３キロほどの散歩コースは、10種類のテーマがある庭に囲まれ、訪れる人をまるで映画のシーンの移り変わりのように様々なスポットに連れて行ってくれる。
ラ・ヴィレットとなる以前は1867年に建てられた食肉処理場で、その後1974年には国立の食肉卸市場となった。この市場をそのまま残した鉄骨とガラスでできた巨大なグランド・アールは、フェアやイベントのために新たにリニューアルした。壮大なジェオデシックと呼ばれるドームにあるアイマックスシアター「ジェオード」は、チュミが設計した18世紀のフランスやイギリスの庭園などに見られる装飾用の建物を思い起こす赤い金属製の「フォリーズ」と同様にラ・ヴィレットのシンボルである。
この公園に用意された大規模な施設やオブジェの数々は、全ての人を惹きつけてやまない。ラ・ヴィレットの計画には多くの批判もあったが、自然を求めるパリジャンが訪れたり、子供たちの遊び場としてもにぎわっている。夏には壁がなく常に開かれた屋外映画館がオープンし、都会の中でも開放感に満ちあふれた大空間として特に賑わいをみせる。訪れる度に新しい発見がある場所、それがラ・ヴィレットだ。

Translation: Satsuki Miyanishi, but La Villette also counts various musical venues (like Christian de Portzampac’s City of Music), or a permanent circus tent. La Philarmonie de Paris, a huge symphony hall by star architect Jean Nouvel, is due to open in 2014.
The park was designed from 1984 to 1987 by architect Bernard Tschumi. Based on Jacques Derrida’s concept of deconstructivism, La Villette also expresses convergence and connections, two master words for Tschumi. The visitors can stroll in the gigantic natural space, but also make stimulating discoveries, in a relaxed atmosphere. Divided by a canal, the park is crossed by two main axes: one running along the water, one from North to South. A 3 kilometres long walk evokes a piece of film reel; bordered by ten themed gardens, it leads visitors from spot to spot, like a movie revealing scene after scene.
Before becoming a park, La Villette was the site of the Parisian slaughterhouses, built in 1867 and relocated in 1974, and of the national wholesale meat market. The huge cast iron and glass Grande Halle has been renewed to hold fairs and events. La Géode, an I-max theatre settled in a spectacular geodesic dome, is one of the strongest symbols of La Villette, like Tschumi’s red metallic “follies”, which punctuate the park and recall the extravagant architectures of the same name, very popular in French and English gardens during the 18th century.
The large array of venues hosted in the park makes it attractive to all kind of audiences. La Villette has met with many criticisms, but has also become a favourite for Parisians in search of nature and of some space for children to play. It is particularly lively in the summer, with its outdoor movie theatre. Without borders or barriers, it is constantly opened, a large space of free circulation in the city. A place to rediscover at each visit!
