Down south from the musee d’orsay in 4th arrondissement of Paris along the Seine river, there is a quiet and secluded area. It’s so quiet that it’s hard to believe there is a crowd of people for the museum just nearbyセーヌ川沿いに位置するパリ７区のオルセー美術館を少し南に下れば、とても閑静なエリアが広がる。近くの美術館前の人だかりが信じられないほど、周りは静かだ。ある日、その場所を散歩していたところ、ショーウインドウに動物の剥製が置かれいるお店、「デロール」を発見した。この動物に招かれるように足を踏み入れると、そこには様々な動物の剥製や昆虫の標本が、まるで会話をし、和んでいるような不思議な心地よさが感じられた。何回訪れても、この店の魅力は尽きることなく、様々な動物を仔細に見ることができるので、ついつい長居してしまう。今回のレポートを書くにあたって、ここのオーナーを務めるムッシュ・ペヨー氏に話を伺った。
1831年に創業以来、数多くの剥製を取り扱ってきたデロール。ここはパリの中でも、現存する最も古いお店のひとつ。店内は小宇宙のようで、四方八方に置かれた数多くの動物たちが我々を迎える。動物たちは、ついさっきまで動いていたかのようにとても生々しく、耳を澄ませば呼吸が聞こえてくるかのよう。ペヨー氏の人柄のごとく、このお店は皆に開かれており、動物たちとの会話の続きをするかのように、耳の毛並みから足の爪先までと、心ゆくまでじっくりと観察することができる。また、顧客は個人から公共の博物館までと、他にはないユニークな層が集まっている。部屋はテーマ毎に分かれており、入口付近は大きな動物、その後に貝や鳥たちの部屋、年に３～４回行なわれるイベントのスペース、奥の部屋には昆虫の標本が並び、中庭に面したスペースは書籍のコーナーとなっている。
ここで、目に留まった１冊の書籍「1000℃: Deyrolle」について話したい。これは、2007年にデロールで起きた火事の経緯をまとめたもので、焼けてしまった剥製と共に、駆けつけた消防士やデロールを支持する多くのアーティストが写っている写真集。この店に置かれている剥製と写真集内の焼けてしまった剥製を比べ、どちらも現実として生きていないのにも関わらず、店内の動物たちは遥かな生命力を感じたのを覚えている。『ここでは動物が第二の人生を歩む』とペヨー氏が語っていたように、デロールには別のかたちの「命のあり方」があるのだと思う。

Text and photo: Shotaro Okada. When I walked around in the area, I found the shop “Deyrolle” which displays stuffed animal specimens in a show window. As if invited by the animal, I felt a mysterious but comfortable aura in the room as if the animal specimens and insects samples there have a conversation that we can’t hear. As writing the report this time, I interviewed an owner of Deyrolle, Monsieur Peio Rahola.
Since store was opened way back in 1831, Deyrolle had dealt a variety of stuffed specimen. This store is one of the oldest stores in Paris. Animals on every side of the store welcome visitors, and the atmosphere of the store is like a small universe apart from the outside. Stuffed animal specimens look so lively as if they were moving soon before I entered the room, and I feel I can hear a breath of the animals if I listen carefully. As character of Monsieur Peio, this store is open to everybody, and you can observe all the details of the animals from tip top to coas of ear. Clients are from an individual person to public museums, unique people gather in the store. Each rooms are divided by a theme: an entrance room is for big size animals, a room for shellfish and bird, a room for store events, which are held three to four times a year, a insect sample line up in a back room, and a book corner is held in the space that faces to the courtyard.
Here I want to introduce a book “1000 : Deyrolle”. This is the photo album about the fire which was held in Deyrolle in 2007, which includes photos of burned stuffed specimen, fire fighters who came to extinguish fire, and lots of artists who support Deyrolle. Comparing animal specimens in the store with burned animal specimens in the photo album, both are not living in this world, but I felt much more vital energy from the animal specimens in the store. “This is the place where animals live a second life” as monsieur Peio Rahola explains, and it seems that there is an another form of life in Deyrolle.
