Diego Fellay is a graphic designer born in Switzerland who works between Paris and his own country. I met him when he was staying in the Swiss house in the Cite Universitaire International (international university city of Paris.)スイス出身で、現在はパリと自国を行き来しながら活動を行っているグラフィック・デザイナー、ディエゴ・フレ。彼がシテ・ユニヴェルシテール（大学都市）のスイス館に滞在している時に知り合い、それ以降、何回か顔を合わせる仲になった。初めて彼の作品を見た時の、シンプルでありながらもユーモアがあるグラフィック、色やフォント使いの品の良さに感銘を受けたのを覚えている。彼にスイスとパリのグラフィックデザインの在り方や、パリのおすすめエリアを聞いた。
なぜパリに住もうと思ったのですか？
私はまだ若いので、人生のひとときを都市で過ごしたいと思い、パリに住むことを決めました。ロンドンという選択肢もありました（グラフィックデザインなら絶対ロンドンの方が良いでしょう）が、パリを選ぶ理由は、スイスの財団があったし、パリでの生活の方が好きだからです。パリはとても穏やかで文化的です。あまりにも速いペースでなにもかも進んで行くロンドンと違って、自分のリズムで仕事をすることができます。
パリでのあなたの活動について教えて下さい。
スイスに住むと、仕事のほとんどはスイスから依頼されます。でもパリでは、当面の間は、文化的なコミュニケーションや本のためだけに仕事をしています。
フランスとスイスのグラフィックデザインで、大きな違いは何だと思いますか？
重要な質問ですね。フランスとスイスのグラフィックデザインには、とてもたくさんの違いがあります。スイス人グラフィックデザイナーとして、私はフランス人がどのようにグラフィックデザインを解釈しているのか全く理解できません。思うに、おそらくフランスでは、現代的な考え方が生まれた「アール・ヌーヴォー」の時代の伝統が重んじられているのだと思います。また、伝統的に流行というものも大切にされます。多くのフランス人グラフィックデザイナーの仕事の中にそれがあることに気づきました。絵の描写や、「構図のイメージ」が、構成そのものよりも重視されます。スイスでは、グラフィックデザインの伝統は1950年代にあります。フルティガーや、マクス・ミーディンガー、ヨゼフ・ミューラー＝ブロックマンらの「国際的なスタイル」を重んじるのです。文字の構成が最も大切です。この違いのために私はフランスではたくさんの問題に直面してしまうのです。（読者のみなさんに分かってもらえますように。上手く表現できませんが考えていることははっきりしているのです）
パリでお気に入りの場所を教えて下さい。
パリに住む旅人は皆そうだと思いますが、リュクサンブール公園を散歩して、パンテオンのそばでコーヒーを飲み、クラブ「ル・ポンポン」に踊りに行くのが好きです。14区にあるシテ・ユニヴェルシテール（大学都市）には素晴らしいお土産もありますし、ル・コルビジュエの設計したスイス館もあります。あまり知られていませんが、パリは旅するのに素晴らしい場所です。庭園は豪華だし、1920年代に建てられた歴史的に重要な建築物もとても素敵です。スイス人としては、ぜひマレ地区にあるスイス文化センターの図書館に行って欲しいと思います。とても素敵な本がありますし、我が家のように落ち着く場所です。

Translation: Shiori Saito and had the chance to see him several times after that. When I first saw his works i remember being deeply impressed by the simplicity, the humor, the refined use of colors and fonts in his graphic designs.
Why did you decide to live in Paris?
I decide to live in Paris, because I’m quite young and want to experience a part of my life in a city.
I could choose London (it is certainly a better choice for graphic design) but I decide Paris because I was here at the Swiss Foundation, and I definitely like the way I’m experiencing Paris : it’s very calm and cultural, I can work at “my rhythm” (à mon rythme) (not like city like London where all goes too fast)
Please tell us about your activities here.
If I live in Swiss, most of my work are commands from Switzerland.
But here in Paris, I work only for cultural communication or edition (books) – for the moment.
What do you think are the main differences between French and Swiss graphic design?
!!!! That’s the point. There is so much difference in graphic design between France and Swiss.
As a Swiss graphic designer, I definitely don’t understand the way french people understand graphic design. I think perhaps the heritage of “art nouveau” (like the beginning of a modern thinking) is important here.
Also fashion as a patrimonies is important here. We notice that in so many french contemporary graphic designer : illustration and the “image of a composition” is more important that the composition.
In switzlerand our heritage comes directly from the 50′ with the “style international” with Frutiger, Max Miedinger, Josef Mueller Brockman.
Where the composition (with text) is the most important. And that’s why I have so much problem here ahahah. (hope your understand, it’s not well write but the idea is here).
Please tell us your favorite places in Paris.
As all the strangers who live in Paris I like just walk in the Jardin du Luxembourg, have a coffee just beside the Pantheon, dance at Le Pompon.
I also have a great souvenir from the Cite Universitaire International and the Swiss Pavilion of Le Corbusier, it was in the 14e Arrondissements. It’s a great place the visit in Paris (very don’t well known), the park is goergous and all the buildings are nice, build by many 20′ important architects.
As a Swiss promoter here, absolutely go to the library of the “centre culturel suisse” in the Marais. so nice book, I’m feel in home.
