The neighborhood of Pigalle in Paris has a lived in feel, boasting strip bars, drapery shops, clubs, bars and the Basilique du Sacré-Cœur presides over the area on top of the hill. It has housed allパリのピガール周辺は生活感に溢れ、エロス、生地屋、クラブやバーが混在し、丘の上にはサクレクール寺院が屹立する刺激的なエリアだ。この坂の多いエリアを練り歩けば、いくつもの予期せぬ発見をすることができる。この場所で生まれたステファン・アシュプールによって2008年にオープンされた「ピガール」。店を訪れると、この界隈の雰囲気がゾクゾクと伝わってくる！
店内のアイテムは、ストリートとモードがミックスされ、各々が自由に組み合わせて楽しむことができるのが特徴だ。
メンズは世界中のクリエイターを集め、アメリカ出身のパリ在住デザイナー「リック・オウエンス」、日本の「フェノメノン」、オランダの「ウッド・ウッド」、 デンマークの「リバティーン-リバティーン」などが揃う。また、奥の通路を歩いたところに位置するレディースは、リック・オウエンスの他に、「マーク・ル・ビアン」「シャロン・ワコブ」など、パリベースのデザイナーのアイテムを揃える。
そして、なによりも特筆すべきはオリジナル・ラインの「ピガール」。フランスメイドで真摯に作られた衣服は、どことなくバットボーイズ感が漂う。少しルーズなシルエットのコットンシャツやパンツには、サイドに民族調の刺繍が施されていた。また、ステファンにとって思い入れのある帽子は、肌に優しい素材感とミニマルなデザイン。パーティやデートに限らず、スポーツの後や何気ないひとときなど、シチュエーションを問わず、いつでも身に付けることができる。店内にはウズベキスタンの帽子やスカーフと共に展示され、一層クールな雰囲気を醸していた。
ここで、「ル・ポンポン」取材時に聞いた、サイドストーリーを述べたい。
ステファンと「ル・ポンポン」のオーナーであるシャラフとは旧知の仲で、彼らとそのクルーで「パン・オ・ショコラ」というユニットを形成している。これは一種のファミリーのように、それぞれが共に交流し合うことで、新しい何かが生まれていくというクールなプロセスを踏んでいる。例えば、「ル・ポンポン」のDJをステファンが務め、2011年夏に「ピガール」が来日した際のイベントを、このユニットが行なっている。「ピガール」のラインも、このように自然なプロセスで相互のコラボレーションも考えているというから、ますます今後の動きに目が離せない。

Text and photo: Shotaro Okada, from the sculptor whom the area is named after, to Toulouese-Loutrec and Picasso and is home to the famous Moulin Rouge. When you walk around this up and down hilly area you will find a lot of surprises on the street. Stéphane Ashpool a local, born and raised in the area, opened the boutique “Pigalle” in 2008, the store represents the exciting vibe of its streets.
Patrons can mix and match street brands with mode brands from all over the world, Rick Owens (US born Paris based designer), Phenomenon (Japan), Wood Wood (Netherlands), Libertine-Libertine (Denmark) are just a few of Pigalle’s stocked labels. The ladies selection – located at the end of the hallway – also stocks Rick Owens and some Paris based designers like Marc Le Bien, Sharon Wauchob.
The most featured collection in the store is their own original line “Pigalle”, locally made clothes with a rude, bad boy taste. Their cotton shirts and pants have slightly oversized silhouettes with tribal stitch work on the sides. Pigalle’s hat, which is Stephane’s favorite item he says “has a fabric kind to the skin and a minimal design suitable for a party, date… anytime regardless of the situation”. This cap is displayed alongside hats and scarfs from Uzbekistan, a combination that tells us how Pigalle, is not just an ordinary select shop.
And combining with others seems to be a passion for Stephane. While I was covering the story I found Stephane and Charaf Tajer – the owner of Le Pompon a speakeasy bar in the area – have known each other for long time, form a unit called Pain O ChoKolat with their crew. They always believe in the process of creating something new when they mix freely and interact like family. Sometimes Stephane DJ`s in Le Pompon and Pain O Chokolat help Pigalle at other times – Pain O ChoKolat organized an event when Pigalle came to Japan in summer 2011. Pigalle apparel line also plans to collaborate in the same way in the future we can’t take our eyes off what they do next.
