Agnès b is not only a fashion brand from Paris, with its own thriving art and movie scene, it also adds another dimension, philanthropy. Galerie du Jour agnès b. is where agnès b curates shows of her favorite artists worksパリを代表するファッション・ブランド、アニエスベー。このブランドの活動はファッションだけに留まらず、アートや映画、慈善活動の支援など多岐に渡っている。ここでは、アニエス自身のセレクションによって、彼女の好きなアートが展示されている「ギャラリー・デュ・ジュール・アニエスベー」を紹介したい。このギャラリーは、1984年11月にジュール通りに設立されたのが始まり。以来、様々なジャンルの気鋭作家の展示を行い、パリのアートシーンを語る上で欠かせない存在となっている。
アニエスの視線は世界各国に向けられており、既存の有名なアーティストを招くというよりも、世界中の新人アーティストを発掘・支援することに、このギャラリーのユニークさがある。さらに、合同展示の場合は、異なる作家のなかに共通のトーンを生み出し、見る者に新しい見方を与えてくれる。年に約10回の展示が行なわれ、過去の作家リストにはケネス・アンガー、フレデリック・ブルーリ・ブアーブレ、ルシアン・エルヴェ、 セイドゥ・ケイタ、 ティエリ・ルフェーブル、ダグラス・コルク、 ジョナス・メカス、ライアン・マッギンレー、J.D.オカイ・オジェイケレ、 ハーモニー・コリンなどの名が連ねている。
そして1995年には、カンカンポア通りに移転し、のちに書店とその横に小さなギャラリースペースが加えられた。書店には、ギャラリー・デュ・ジュールが出版している書籍の他に、限定品やアーティスト・ブック、ギャラリーの作家のポストカードを扱う。このスペースは、奥に続くギャラリーの出入り口にもなっているため、展示の前後にゆったりとした時間を過ごすことができる。ここを抜けると中庭が広がり、すぐ近くにギャラリーの入口がある。ギャラリー内は、アーティストに対する敬意に溢れ、その作品の意図を感じられるように優しい配慮がなされている。気に入った作品があれば、思う存分に観賞できるのが嬉しい。現代美術の施設である、ポンピドゥー・センターからとても近いので、パリのアート巡りを考えている人には、是非ともおすすめしたい場所だ。

Text and photo: Shotaro Okada. Since opening at Rue du jour in November 1984 many a shrewd artist has exhibited here, so much so, it’s now an indispensable place in the Paris art scene.
Agnès takes a genuine interest in art from around the world, with a strong ethos on supporting new up and coming artists rather than inviting more established artists. For group exhibitions the gallery hand picks artists who they feel, resonate a similar tone, in order to transform the work, providing the viewer with a new perception on the piece. With around ten exhibitions a year, the gallery has seen its fair share of artists go through the gallery such as; Kenneth Anger, Frédéric Bruly Bouabré, Lucien Hervé, Seydou Keïta, Thierry Lefébure, Douglas Kolk, Jonas Mekas, Ryan McGinley, J. D. Okhai Ojeikere and Harmony Korine just to name a few.
In 1995, the gallery moved to Rue Quincampoix, a bookstore with a small gallery space attached. In the bookstore, there’s books that the Galerie du Jour has published, limited editions, artist books and postcards by artists that the gallery embraces. The bookstore space plays a role as a gateway to the gallery, so you can spend your time perusing before or after the exhibition. After the shop you’ll come to a central courtyard that leads to the gallery entrance. An aura of respectability surrounds the gallery that helps bring out the essence of each work.
Unlike the more tourist filled galleries around Paris, if you discover a piece you like, you can appreciate it as long as you want. Located just near the modern art complex facility Centre Pompidou, I definitely recommend a visit if you plan to tour art spots in Paris.
