ニューヨークから世界の音楽シーンを牽引する音楽プロデューサー、ジョー・クラウゼル。2008年に新作「Corresponding Echoes」をリリース。Joe Claussell is a music producer who pulls music scene from New York to the world. His new work “Corresponding Echoes” is released in 2008.
ご自身の音楽制作において、インスピレーションを与えられた人やものはありますか？
それは「ライフ（人生）」「人生の勉強」だね。
「音楽を作ることがかっこいい」なんて今まで思ったことは全くないからね。音楽を作る、それはただ偶然的に起こった事で、今まで一度も「DJになりたい！プロデューサーになりたい！」なんて思ったこともない。全ては偶然に、自然な流れで今まできました。
そして私は音楽というものをとても真摯に、真面目に受け止めている。音楽を宗教や礼拝などと比べると、宗教もある意味人々を呼び集める行いかと思うけど、実際ではそうではなく、多くの人種差別も伴うと思うし。
だけど音楽は違う。音楽を通じ、わたしたちは橋のような役割としてあらゆる文化や人種を繋げることができる。音楽には宗教よりも強大なパワーがあると思う。そして地球のリズム、鼓動というものが、我々のつくる音楽そのものだと思っている。耳で聴き、肌で感じる、それが私の作るミュージックスタイル。私達は音楽というリズムに囲まれて生きていてそれは同時に音とリズムというものが我々の住む地球において、支配的なパワーを持っているということだと。
ご自身が初めてプレイしたDJパーティーのことを教えて頂けますか？
たしか17、8歳くらいの頃、生まれ育ったニューヨークでだった、友達と一緒にDJ機材をそろえて結婚式のような特別なパーティーでプレイしましたね。誰かが僕らをDJとして雇ってくれたんでね。
でも初めてDJプレイを見たというのは、クラブのような所では一切なくて、それもまた自然な引き合わせだったんだけど…。昔、兄と一緒にブルックリンの「ブラック・アソシエーション」という団体に関わっていて、近所の人たちと一緒にストリートパーティーなどをしていたんだ。そして兄が当時、パイオニアのSX1010 レシーバー、Techniquesのオリジナル1200ターンテーブル、そして一組のスピーカーをストリートに持ち出してきてね。これが生まれて初めての DJプレイを見る、そして周りのみんなが踊っている姿を楽しむという経験だったね。
そして両親の存在というのも、自分が音楽へのめり込む大きな影響を与えたと思う。
実は「Corresponding Echoes」のジャケットに、私の母の写真が使われていて、彼女がまだ10代だった頃のもので、ステレオの前でレコードを持っている写真は「Sacred Rhythm Music」のロゴにもなっているんだよ。これらすべてが私の音楽的ルーツと存在を示しているんだ。全ては幼い頃からの教育から、そう家族の中から生まれてきたんだ。質問の答えに戻るとなれば、私が今こうやってここにいてインタビューを受けているのも全て自然な流れ。そんな思いで私もいつも音楽に接し、また音楽を作り続けている。
現在のニューヨークのミュージックシーンはどうですか？
正直なところニューヨークのみならず、特にミュージックシーンというものに関心が薄れてきているんだよね。でも昔ほどエキサイティングな感じではなくなってきていると思う。レギュラーパーティーとしては 「Sacred Rhythm Music」名義でニューヨークのウエストヴィレッジにある「LOVE」というクラブで月２回パーティーをやっている。サンデーアフタヌーンにね。
なぜサンデーアフタヌーンパーティー（日曜午後に開催）にこだわるのですか？
ただ単純に自分にとって楽だから。
「Body & Soul」の時からだけど、朝の３時にクラブへ行きプレイするという事にもうエキサイトメントを感じなくなってきてるんだよね。ラウドミュージックにタバコの煙も蔓延してるしね。そう考えると日曜午後の方が自分にとってはるかに良いんだよ。深夜前に終わり、ちゃんと寝て週始めに備える、よりピースフルだね。

1966年、ニューヨーク・ブルックリン生まれ。
レコードショップ「Dance Tracks」のスタッフを経験した後、1992年にレーベル「Jungle Sounds」より「Instant House」名義でCDをリリース。
1996年に自身のレーベル「Spiritual Life Music」を設立し、Francois Kevorkian、Danny Krivitとともに始めたパーティー「Body & Soul」でDJを務める。
1999年には、ソロアルバム「Language」をリリース。その後、King Street Sounds / Nite Groovesから「Mid The Vibe: Over 140 Minutes of Spiritual Journey」、BBEから「Music……. A Reason to Celebrate」 、2006年にはミックスCD「Translate」をリリース。

Is there anyone who gives you an inspiration your music?
It’s “Life”. It’s a Studying life.
Why I create music is never I thought it was cool, I’m here creating music by accident. I’ve never set myself I want to be a DJ or producer. Actually it all happened in a very natural way.
I take music very very seriously. When compare music to religion or church, religion is something that brings people together, but it actually doesn’t. the more racism in religion than anything else, in my opinion. But in music, it’s like a bridge that all the culture brings together. Music has higher power than religion. Rhythm of our planet is music itself, and all you have to do is listen and feel, that’s how I create music. We live in a world where rhythm is surrounding us. It tells you music and rhythm is dominant force of our planet.
Could you tell us the first party you played in your life?
That was when I was 17-18 years old in NYC, my friends and I put DJ equipment together, and someone hired us as DJs went for a special party like wedding party. And my first experience watching a DJ was not in a club or either. It was very natural experience as well. My brother and I used to involve in “Black Association” where we had a party with my neighborhood. My brother one day brought a really good sound system to the street, which was Pioneer SX1010 receiver, Techniques original 1200 turntable, and pair of speakers. And my brother brought those equipments on the street, he was not DJing, but playing music. That was my first experience I watched DJ and everybody dancing. And my family made me into music, actually picture of a woman on Corresponding Echoes is my mother at teenager. She’s in front of stereo holding a record. That’s the logo of Sacred Rhythm Music as well. It shows the roots of my music of existence. All the music came from my education, from my home,
So again to answer your question, I’m here very natural way. That’s how I treat and create music.
How is the music scene in NYC going on?
Honestly, I don’t really follow music scene in NYC or anywhere, but it not as interesting as before. We have regular party for Sacred Rhyme Music twice a month on Sunday afternoon at club called “Love” in West Village.
Any reasons why you stick to Sunday Afternoon party?
It’s really easy for me.
Coming from Body & Soul, my time now, I’m not really excited about going to a club at 3 o’clock in the morning. It’s smoke all over the place and loud music So it’s better for me on Sunday afternoon.
It’s more peaceful. We finish up at midnight, get some sleep and get ready for a week.

Born in Brooklyn, NY in 1966. After his experience working as a record shop staff at Dance Tracks, Joe Claussell in the name of Instant House has released CD from a label, Jungle Soundsyo in 1992. In 1996 he has established his own label, Spiritual Life Music and since then, with Francois Kevorkian and Danny Krivit together he has started a party called Body & Soul as a DJ. Since his release of a solo album “Language” in 1999, he has released “Mid The Vibe: Over 140 Minutes of Spiritual Journey” from King Street Sounds / Nite Grooves, “Music……. A Reason to Celebrate” from BBE, and mix CD “Translate” in 2006.
