If you imagine “Shopping in New York”, you probably picture famous 5th avenue or SOHO, However, you may feel something is missing by seeing all business-like stores in the areas. My first visit to Atelier New Yorkニューヨークでショッピングといえば、有名ブランドが建ち並ぶ五番街や、ソーホーを思い浮かべる人も多いと思うが、実際に訪れてみると、日本のそれとは違い、大規模で商業的なお店の構えに多少なりとも、モノ足りなさを感じる人もいるのではないだろうか。
私が、ソーホーのはずれにあるメンズストア、アトリエ・ニューヨークに初めて訪れたのは、アトリエのすぐ近くにオープンしているリックオーウェンスNY店に訪れた時であった。お店の名前も入り口に小さく記してあるだけで、もし外からウィンドウ越しに商品が見えなかったら、気づかずに素通りしてしまっていただろう。しかし、ブランドのセレクト群と、服屋というよりは、むしろギャラリーに近いそのレイアウトは、ファッションに興味がなくとも、一見の価値がある。
日本ブランドのコムデギャルソン、ヨージヤマモト、ユリウスを始め、世界各国の歴史のあるブランド、キャロルクリスチャンポエル、イブサンローラン、グィディ、そして、世界が注目するダミールドーマなどの若手デザイナーブランドが、一つ一つ、アート作品の様に陳列され、その魅力を十分に伝えている。確かな価値観を基に創られた広々とした空間は居心地がよく、ゆっくりと商品を見ることのも魅力だ。ソーホーの喧噪から離れた場所で、静かに営業しているアトリエ・ニューヨークは、ニューヨークでもトップクラスのメンズストアであることは間違いないだろう。

Text: Ryo Miyamoto was when stopping by Rick Owens which is one block away from the store. I almost missed it because it only has a small store sign which people can hardly see. However, if people enter the store, they will be surprised and amazed by its atmosphere. It looks like a gallery than a regular clothing store.
Atelier New York is carrying a couple of Japanese high-end designers such as Comme des Garcon, Yohji Yamamoto, and Julius. In addition, they have various historical designers such as Yves Saint Lauren, Carol Christian Powell and a new designer, Damir Doma and so on. Every piece is hung together beautifully, stays quietly, but tells its beautifulness distinctly. Atelier New York is definitely one of the best men’s boutiques in New York and it is worth of visiting for not only fashion oriented people but also people who like to see beautiful art pieces.
