ザ・ブロードThe BROAD

For the past five years, Downtown Los Angeles has been undergoing a significant transformation. This transformation is evident in the many new modern high-rise buildings andこの５年間、ロサンゼルス中心部は重要な変化を受けてきた。景色に点在する新しくモダンな高層ビルだけでなく、交通やレストラン、バー、クラブなどを見れ ばその変化は一目瞭然である。ロサンゼルス中心部の「再生」は、かつての暗く、不毛で寒々しい景色に、エネルギーと美的価値を与えた。この新しいエネルギーと美的価値を明白に見せるのが現代アート美術館「ザ・ブロード」なのだ。
実業家であり慈善家でもあるイーライ＆エディス・ブロード夫妻が数十年かけて収集したプライベート・コレクションを展示するために設立した美術館「ザ・ブロード」は、2015年9月20日に一般に公開された。ロサンゼルスの心臓部とも言えるグランドアベニューに位置し、ロサンゼルス現代美術館やウォルト・ディズニー・コンサートホールといった有名な施設の傍である。建築はディラー・スコフィディオ+レンフロ建築事務所とゲンスラーがタッグを組んでデザイン。ブロードは蜂の巣のような”多孔性”のある外壁を持っていて、隣接のぎらぎらした、金属的なウェーブのあるフランク・ゲーリーに よるデザインのウォルト・ディズニー・コンサートホールと明確な違いを演出している。約11万平方メートル、1億4,000万ドル（約170億円）の建築にブロードのコレクションである現代アート作品2,000点を収容している。
中は３階からなる。１階ミュージアムショップ、メインエントランス、ロビー、そして素晴らしいキュレーションによる企画展示のための広い空間がある。２階にはブロード夫妻の学術的な研究のための事務所と、展示しきれない現代アートのコレクション作品を収容している。３階はブロード夫妻にとって印象深い現代アート作品を収蔵しており、その作家名を一部挙げるとアンディ・ウォーホルやカラ・ウォーカー、ジェフ・クーンズ、ロイ・リヒテンシュタイン、ジャン・ミッシェル・バスキア、バーバラ・クルーガーらが中心となっている。ブロード美術館は、素晴らしい作品群をより深く楽しむために数時間は費やしたい場所の一つだ。現代美術に深い造詣を持たない人々のために、美術館は便利なモバイルアプリやレヴァー・バートンによるナレーションの素晴らしいセルフガイド式の音声ツアーを提供している。

This renaissance of downtown Los Angeles had added a palpable energy and new aesthetic to what was once a dark, barren, and bleak landscape. This new energy and aesthetic is no more evident than the new Broad museum.
Founded by philanthropists Eli and Edythe Broad, the new Broad Museum opened its doors to the public on September 20, 2015. It sits on Grand Avenue in the heart of Los Angeles with the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) and Walt Disney Concert Hall as prominent neighbors. The building was designed by the architectural firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro in collaboration with Gensler. The Broad has a “porous” honeycomb-like exterior skin that distinguishes it from the nearby garish, metallic waves of the Gehry-designed Walt Disney Hall. The 120,000-square-foot, $140-million building houses 2,000 works of art in the Broad collection.
It’s interior consists of three floors. The first floor houses the museum gift shop, main entrances, lobby, and considerable space devoted to curated rotating exhibits. The second floor houses the Broad’s administrative offices and vaulted collection of contemporary art that is yet to be displayed. The third floor highlights the depth of the Broad’s impressive collection of contemporary art with works by Andy Warhol, Kara Walker, Jeff Koons, Roy Lichtenstein, Jen-Michael Basquiat, and Barbarer Kruger to name a few. One must spend hours several hours in the Broad to truly take in this amazing collection of work. For those not well versed in contemporary art, the Broad provides a very helpful mobile app as well as wonderful self-guided audio tour narrated by actor Levar Burton.
