ニューヨークに次ぐアメリカの主要機能都市として名を馳せるロサンゼルス。特にエンターテイメント産業がものを言うこの街に住んでいると、多種多様にプロダクションに関わる人々の、時には影武者的な貢献を目にする。June 2002 – Summer has arrived in Los Angeles and the organizers of the 7th Annual Smashbox Assistants Photography exhibition are almost ready for the crowds.しかしこの黒子的活躍は最終プロダクトにあらわれ評価されることはなく、水面下で泳ぎ続ける俊英な魚の存在はなかなか認識されない。撮影スタジオスマッシュボックスはそういった現代写真界で活躍するトップフォトグラファーたちのアシスタントに毎年スポットライトをあてている。
オーナーのディーン・ファクターとその弟、ファッション／セレブフォトグラファーのデービス・ファクターはかの化粧品ブランドを打ち立てたマックスファクターの血を引く。その影響もあってかスマッシュボックスでは自身のコスメティックス・ラインのほか、スタイル部門（スタイリスト、メーク、ヘアー）をも誇る。そしてプロダクションと切っても切れないのがケータリング。同じ敷地内にあるGOODFOODはオーナーシェフ、フィリップ・ウェインガーテンの指揮の下、こだわった素材とプレゼンテーションで1990年よりケータリングサービスを提供。

Photos: Aya Muto from New Image Art Gallery The bar is set up outside, ashtrays aligned, and hor’devours are being marched out of Smashbox’s in-house catering house – Good Foods – also renown for turning out gourmet meals and snacks. It’s nothing really unusual for the studio whose clientele of celebrity photographers include the likes of Herb Ritts, Matthew Rolston, Annie Leibovitz and Bruce Weber. There’s also the legacy flowing through the veins of owners (and brothers), Dean and Davis Factor – great grandson of Max Factor who transformed the makeup industry by providing Hollywood glamour to the masses.
